speedo accuracy / innacuracy

Post by benny hedges »

i know this is a long standing debate and there is obviously the speedo healer solution which imo is a last resort...
i have 15/41 on my bike atm and according to http://www.gearingcommander.com i should be getting the following speeds in top gear:
3000rpm = 50mph
6000rpm = 100mph
10,000rpm = 167mph

behind cars slowing down for speed cameras at 50mph mine is bob on 3k
it shows 100mph (on a track of course) at just under 6k
and at the limiter in top its at 170

thats with the (older) speedo i have at fitted atm..... my spare speedo, with the same gearing, it goes off the clock past 180 at the limiter in top 8O
so today im at the side of a mate on a blade with a speedo healer fitted (on a track again obviously) and at 150 it shows 9000rpm, which according to gearing commander is more or less bang on!
(incidentally the storm pisses all over the blade up to about 130!)

im interested in why there is so much discrepancy between 2 speedos on the same bike and why this one reads the correct speed when others appear to be 10 - 20% out.
for example, yesterday, on a run with cheekykev on his firestorm, we both did exactly the same route between fuel stops, i recorded 92 miles, yet kevs bike recorded 95 on standard gearing.... you wouldve expected mine to have been showing more?

just wondering if anyone else has similar findings, speedo v gps or against another bike with speedo healer.

im convinced the answer is in the value of this resistor.... R8
Image

the circuitry in the speedo appears to convert the pulse from the sensor to a voltage which is applied to the coil and makes a varying magnetic field to move the needle.... (correct me if im wrong someone?)
i intend to try soldering a variable resistor across this one and trim it to get it 100% accurate....

when i find a suitable pot i'll mount it externally so i can trim it on the fly, let you know how it goes :)
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

I've got -1 front, +2 rear, and I know that my speedo is approximately 10% off. Was thinking of getting a healer, but just can't be bothered. If you find a way to fix it by adjusting resistor values -- tell us!
