SPONDON BRACKETS

Post by geoff996 »

Hi All, don't know who might be intrested, but been in touch with spondon about their swinging arm brackets, they don't know if they still have the mould but are looking into it. SO IF they still have them would any of you be intrested if they can make any?????? Might be able to get a better price for a bulk order

Sounds interesting, but do you also need to factor in that you will need Spondon to weld them to the frame, as the alignment will be critical and I guess they are the only people with a jig to line up all the parts. then rearsets on top of that [and my new ones wont work with those brackets:thumbdown: ]

if we can get all the measurements from Bigspanishmarty, then that should be possible to set the brackets up as you say.

I would still want a good welder to do the work for visual and structural reasons, and do you need the engine out to then weld them on the inside?

hi guys
talk about stitch me up, theirs me thinking i would have one of only a few spondon bikes ever made and then you lot come up with this idea, thats charming that is.....
you are welcome to come and take measurements from the bike, but don't ask me to do it, because i will balls it up trust me. my bike is about to be built up pretty soon, so now would be a good time to do it while their is no bodywork or rear subframe attached to it.
amcq46 can kiss goodbye to those lush gilles rearsets tho, and you would all have to sort something out in that department, fitting the swingarm is a piece of piss just a couple of small spacers are needed, also you will need to cut your sprokect covers to fit aswell. and as things stand i'm not even sure the a normal hugger will fit without a bit of cut n shut.
let me know what you wanna do and i'll sort out a time for someone to come and take some measurements, it will have to be between mon/fri 9am/5pm......
goodluck guys

Alignment won't be a problem, as they will go exactly where the standard footpeg brackets go, so fitting them will mean that you can't fit the standard rider footrests.
You'll have to buy a set of aftermarket rearsets.

But I'm still in, possibly.

I have been thinking about an alternative, where the bracket could be bolted on rather than welded, and by machining 10mm off of the end of each side swinging arm, the plate would fit between the swingarm and the standard footpeg brackets.

The plate can be fitted with 10mm wide bearings, meaning that the bearing could be renewed if any wear occurred, which can't be done if the plate is welded on and without bearings.

Bolting the plates on would mean drilling holes in the frame, but I don't think that this would weaken the frame, and they could be easily plugged if it needed to be removed, unlike welded ones.

Comments welcome, as ever... :confused
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

My thoughts are, I think you are missing a fairly crucial part here. Don't get me wrong though, if Spondon can produce some more of these brackets then that's fantastic for those interested.

If my memory is as good as I think it is  the point I think you're missing is this, when Spondon modified those frames for the VTR Firestorm they strengthened that part of the frame casting and boxed that section in making it much stronger and rigid where the brackets were welded on. Go and check for yourself, put your fingers behind that section of the frame and you'll find it's open at the back of it, unless of course you check YETI's Moriwaki bikes :)

If you just have the new Spondon brackets welded on to what is there now, I think you'll find the whole purpose of this modification to be somewhat less effective.

It might be a good idea to double check with Spondon that what I'm saying is correct, but I'm almost 100% sure I am.

Chris.

I understand what you are saying and to make full effect of the bracing you would proberly have to box section the frame, but the reason i'm intrested is for purely cosmetics, i already have braced my swinging arm and to be honest it make no differance to how the bike handles as far as i can tell, but i like the look.

i understand what your saying geoff but thats a fair bit of work needed to get that look, first you don't know how much they will cost, second you have to find someone to do a good job of fitting them and thats hopeing you only have to take apart the rear of the bike, third you will have to find some rearsets to fit or get something made up, fourth you will have to mod your front sprocket cover, if you can do a lot of that work yourself then perhaps it wont be that expensive, good luck with it matey.....

Hi Marty, the cost is the biggest hurdle but i can do alot of it myself, i know who will weld it and footrests aren't a problem. We'll see what accurs
