Manual cct's... these ok?

Post by Opel »

Hi
Just a quick question regarding some manual cct’s purchased for me as a Christmas box last year. Yes I’ve finally got around to fitting them while under the cover checking valve clearances.
Anyway, the ones I’ve got were bought off a guy called ‘philpont’ on ebay and seem like they’re up to the job but… The bit that comes into contact with the cam chain guide has a flat profile (about 15mm diameter) and not the more domed profile of the ‘APE’s’

I’ll try and add a image to help explain. Anyway, are these ‘philpont’ flat profile ones ok to fit?
Many thanks in advance for information imparted.. it’ll be very much appreciated.

Many many thanks for the quick reply... they'll be in tomorrow then. Rain and work have just suspended play for today.

Fortunately I walk to work so the bike can rest...

I assume you have prited out the instructions on getting tdc, dont follow the Haynes manual, and dont assume you can just remove & refit like on a 4cyl bike

The flat end is fine; they act upon the back of the tensioner blade, which has an aluminium section which the tensioner end pushes on.
Because the part of the blade acted upon presents a flat face to the tensioner it makes no difference whether it has a flat or rounded end.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Many thanks for the excellent advice...

Well the manuals cct’s are now fitted without any drama (!)

I did print off the guide from this forum but I had both covers off for a valve clearance check, and so a large majority [of the guide] wasn’t required.

Incidentally I bought a rather nifty carb balancer of the bay a few weeks back, and used it for the first time during this latest fettling session. It didn’t cost much at all, and I recon that I couldn’t have made one cheaper. It even came with adapters, so I didn’t have the hassle of tracking one of them down either. The photo below shows it hanging off the left hand bar end.

Anyways, nearly all back together now…
