Hi everyone, i am looking forward to picking up my first VTR tomorrow, it is a 98' model with just 12,000 mls. on the clock. It has just been serviced so should be trouble free, ( obviously the tensioners which i have read about should be OK for a good few miles yet ! ), although any tips would be appreciated.

welcome matey, from what i read i wouldn't trust originalcct's after 13 yrs on the bike, for the sake of what it costs to get them replaced you would have piece of mind.

+1 on the cct's, they don't just go on high mileage/heavily used bikes. Do yourself a big favour and fit either manuals or do the stopper mod. Once done you can enjoy a brilliant bike without the worry.

Thanks for replies. Well i picked up the bike today, 60 mile trip home & everything seemed OK. This is the first big twin i have had ( i presently also own an early VFR750fk ) & fancied something slightly different ! First impression was what i had already foreseen, must fit some bar risers ( back not as young as it was ) has anyone tried the Genmar ones !
The previous owner has fitted straight through Viper Cans, i have the baffles that fit as well. ( he gave me the original pipes as well ) but he never altered the jetting etc. does this need doing ( it pops & spits a bit on the overrun ), & would this do any damage !!
Finally ( for now ), i get the bit about manual CCT's but what are stoppers !!
Oh, & are there any foolproof instructions on this site to fit the CCT's, i don't mind trying it myself as long as someone tells me the correct procedure.

1...they do pop and bang a bit on the overrun, but if it is too bad,then it might be an air leak in the exhaust. They are generally ok with just pipes added without a jet kit, if it feels like it pulls ok, then it is ok.
2...the stopper mod is where you fit a limit stop inside your CCT cut to the lengh that is correct for the cam chain slack in your bike. Then if the spring fails, the tensioner won't fully retract (the stopper stops it!), and although a bit noisy you can happily ride home till you can fix it. This is the solution I use

The banging & popping is probably down to air leaks where the new pipes are fitted. I have scorpions on mine and they make nice noises too.
