Sorry to make such a boring post. I am looking for some advice on cleaning the chain on my VTR before lubing it (Castrol Chain Wax). It has sticky black muck on it now. Should I spray the sides of the chain as well?
Have had shafties up till now so any advice will help. Why don't bikes have centre stands these days?
Thx in advance.
Chain stuff
Centre stand
Personally I spray it all then just wipe excess and let it set.
Centre stand are less common now because they compromise groung clearance and are heavy. With that in mind you only NEED one for maintenance sot they are bieng left off.

Cleaning:
Get some paraffin from B&Q and a nail brush
Put a load of newspaper down under the chain
Scrub it liberally with the brush dipped in paraffin
Leave 10 mins to dry
Lubing:
Spray the inside of the chain, just before it gets to the rear sprocket
Where the side plates meet the rollers is where all the friction is so thats what needs lubing
Don't spray the sides, they don't need any lubrication. Just get an oily rag to wipe the side plates (both sets, left and right) to stop them going rusty
Hope this helps
