DID Rear Sprocket pic?

Post by vtryorks »

Does anyone have a picture of a recent DID rear sprocket for a firestorm that they have taken themselves.

I'm starting to suspect that the rear I have is not genuine DID. It has a logo on it that I cannot trace. its like a "P" inside a sprocket with a lightning bolt.

This sound kosher?

Where did you get this kit from? Many of the DID kits are just a DID chain with cheap as chips sprockets from unknown manufacturers. I always buy my chain, front sprocket and rear sprocket individually because then you can specify exactly what you want.

These are what I use:

Superb bits of kit and worth the extra cost without a shadow of a doubt.

Yes, it seems DID do not actually make sprockets, they just supply from two other manufacturers and include them in their kit.

A lesson learned for next time. I think I'll junk them both and start again with Renthals.

The brand I have is Power Rite. The DID kits are supplied with these, or another brand stamped JT apparently.

Been reading about fake DID chains doing the rounds too. Is there a definitive way to identify a fake? Maybe I'm being paranoid here, in fact, I am.

Thanks tiny for your suggestions. The kit came from DK Motorcycles who looked like a good dealer, but apparently have a dodgy past.....

Unfortunately there seems to be fake ‘everything’ out there at the moment, it used to be only luxury goods that were copied watches, sunglasses etc but now almost anything is fair game, car parts, bike parts, you name it, now what’s the worst that can happen if you buy a fake rolex ? you’ll look a tw*t, it’ll make your wrist go green or the hands will fall off, now consider the consequences of buying a substandard bike chain, or inferior brake pads.

The problem with ‘fake’ goods is they don’t have to pass any tests or conform to industry standards, even the cheapest legitimate goods have to pass basic quality tests, they may not be up to the standard of premium brands but at least they are a know quantity, and it’s up to the consumer to decide whether to go cheap and careful or pay the premium top brand products command, the real problem comes when the consumer buys fake branded merchandise believing it to be genuine, a dodgy Rolex isn’t going to kill you, a dodgy chain or brake pads just might.

I think you'll probably be OK with the stuff you have, I'd guess the chain is DID and the sprockets lare ikely to be decent quaility too, afterall they aren't trying to be something their not, your more likely to get fake renthal stuff because it's a premium brand and therefore worth copying,
It's case of buyer beware, only buy from a trusted, approved dealer.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

I've decided to say wombles to it and buy a set of renthal discs. I'll keep the chain as it was wrapped in DID paper and seemed to be decent quality.

Live and learn.

Don't know how much your renthal is but give supersprox rear sprockets a go.
Alloy centre but steel teeth and they last for ages, i used them on my enduro bike and they were second to none so i reckon with the amount of torque the VTR puts down, it would work well...
Just a thought...

Vtryorks,

I have just bought a chain and sprocket kit from DK motorcycles and what is supplied is a genuine DID X ring chain and the front and rear sprockets are as you described. They are Powerite sprockets, made in Taiwan. The rear should also have a serial number dotmatrixed into it, 3430241. Front is 3333316. Both of these are carbon steel.

Hope this helps.

Regards

turbo, yes, thats what I received. The rear is going back tomorrow for exchange but I'm not fitting them, I've had terrible trouble with the rear one I got originally.

Have you ascertained it is oval? Have you traced around it on a piece of paper and checked by folding it if it's out of shape? I haven't sees anything conclusive.

Its not oval, I am assuming the bolt holes are out of position.

EDIT: As far as I can tell...

As the sprocket and holes should be ideally symmetrical, again if you trace it out and fold the paper, hold it up to a light then if it's out in any way should be plain to see. Just an idea to test out before you post it back.
