6 spoke wheels

Post by simo »

Keep thinking I would like to fit some 6 spoke wheels as I like the look. Does anybody think they're any lighter?

Yes, I do.
I will weigh them and report.

If I remember correctly, one of the members on the Superhawk forum weighed them and they weighed slightly more than the stock three-spokers (by slightest margin, however, IIRC)...

Just weighed them, and the results are:
For bare wheels, that is-
FRONT- bearings in, but no discs or disc bolts
REAR- Bearings in, but no brake disc, disc bolts, rubber wedges or sprocket carrier in
(All rims have been powder coated).

Bare three spoke front: 4.5kg
Bare six spoke front: 4.5kg so they're the SAME

Bare three spoke rear: 7.3kg
Bare six spoke rear: 7.0kg and so it's LIGHTER

Happy with that, another pie's worth saved where it counts.

But just for interest, I also weighed an almost-new ( 100 miles only) Michelin Pilot Power front tyre, and it comes in at 3.9 kg
A part-worn Dunlop Sportsmart weighs 4.1kg.

I wish manufacturers would publish weights for their tyres when new. No point having a bit more grip if the extra weight ruins the suspension effectiveness.
Anyone know where you can find out?

Thanks! A member of the swedish forum told me that I shouldn't go for six spokes cause they are so heavy.
But now I know he's wrong :D

Mind you, he still is our guru when it comes to pretty much everything...
Some of you thats on the superhawk forum might recognise his nick: Tweety
One of the greatest in VTR mods

Much respect for Tweety- he knows his bikes, sho'nuff.

I've also seen weights that contradict my own findings, and wonder whether there are different six-spoke designs, or whether they just vary a bit?

6 spoke wheels

Post by lloydie »

The 3 spoke cbr400rr tri arm front wheel weighs 300g lighter than the 6spoke
So if you change your 3 spoke for one of the cbr400rr nc23 that will be 600g saved

That be due to the old bits of wheel bearings left inside the hollow spokes :problem:

I posted the weights mensioned above on the swedish forum and got upstaged by Tweety in an instant...
His reply were a bit to long for me to translate and post here ( that is, I 'm to lazy).
But he wrote that the six spokes ARE heavier due to bearings, discs etc. And that he wondered what type of 3 spoked wheels were weighed since the ones from newer cbr's is much lighter than the original VTR wheels...

Should've known better than try to set HIM straight... oh well, lesson learned...

They were standard Storm ones, nothing trick used.
I left the bearings and seals in, but removed the discs and disc bolts.

I was surprised myself, as they have been weighed and posted up before on the SH forum, but wanted to do it for myself with exact weights, not just heavier or lighter.
Based on what I'd read before on SH, I was expecting the sixes to be heavier.

I can't re-weigh with photos now to prove my findings as I swapped the tyres over to the sixes, so weighed the bare sixes first then weighed the bare threes after the tyres had been swapped.

I suppose there might also be some variation in the weight of the sixes?

So if anyone has wheels sitting around, could you weigh them and post?

Just list whether it's with or without discs.

Tweety may be good with his knowledge, but, he acts like a right jumped up pretentious prick. Just my own view mind lol

Back on topic...last I heard/read the 6s were heavier, actually one of the reasons I stopped looking for them....If it turns out they aren't then I might start my search again lol
Would love to see everybody elses findings in case tony.mon results were freakishly lucky lol
