different calipers for the storm
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!
Re: different calipers for the storm
Having looked into, and researched, this option a while back, prior to getting the "SP-ish" Nissins, what I found was that many owners of the bikes these were origianlly fit on (in particular those who used their mounts on tracks, for example), switched and "upgraded" to the said Nissins.
Enough said.

Marty, I know he hasn't been on here for sometime now, but Kitch fitted a pair to his Storm (well Roger at revolution actually fitted them for him

I can vouch for the Nissins too, mine came from an sp1- little bit of grinding and you're good to go.
IMO the Tokico calipers have too much too look after, a LOT more seals etc.
Have any fellow members done this already? Perhaps they could let us know what they're like?

Re: different calipers for the storm
In a PB article I quoted from in my thread about brake caliper options, the were working through upgrades on their project GSXR1000K1, to try and make it competitive with the newest version.
The K1 is fitted with the 6 pot calipers, and a common upgrade is to ditch them for the 4 pots of an SV!!
The reason was to do with pad distortion due to the long length making the 6 potter less effective in practice than it is in theory.
They then data logged the bike with various caliper an master cyl setups and showed that the biggest improvements were:
A) fit new HH pads to standard 6 pots
B) then further improved by fitting the 4 pots with new HH pads
They the surprised the tester by fitting a bigger radial master cyl to option b) because the tester said he thought these were the best brakes, but the data logger showed that it was significantly worse than option a). The illusion here being that he had a very stiff lever feel and this made him think he had the most braking power, but he had lost hydraulic advantage so was not generating the same pressure at the caliper pistons!
So back to the 6 pots, yes they have more pad and piston area, but will only deliver this in real life if they are high end race products that use a separate pad for each piston to get away from the distortion problems.

Re: different calipers for the storm
My current set-up consists of CBR600F4i calipers (same as SP-1 and 98-99 Blade, with 34/32mm piston combo) and an OEM (19x16) Brembo radial MC from a late model Duc. I previously tried a Nissin 19x18 radial MC (from a 2006 ZX-6R), along with SP-2 calipers (and SP-2 MC) and the set-up I am running now is very, very good, with lots of power, reasonable lever travel and light action/decent fededback. Try it, you'll like it (and you won't break the bank in the process). As for pads, I am running Vesrah SRJLs (RJLs work well too, at about half the price).......
FWIW, the set-up I am proposing would get you very close (in terms of specs) to what is on a Duc 1098/1198 (same MC, calipers are 34/34, rotors are 330mm; if you've ridden one you know those brakes are VERY hard to beat)

330mm rotors check, got them
cbr600 f4i calipers no cheap ones on ebay uk at the mo.
OEM (19x16) Brembo radial MC from a late model Duc, does this fit straight on or does it need hitting with a hammer micky

Re: different calipers for the storm
JUst remember Martin, SP-1 and 98-99 Blade calipers are mechanically identical (all have 34/32 pistons; 929 has 34/30 IIRC), the only difference being the colour (F4i are black, SP are gold, Blade are silver). AS for the MC, I think all late model Ducs (with radials anyhow) use the same MCs (clutch and brake; mine are from a Monster 1100, for example). I bought the set (clutch and brake) from a dropped bike (no lever, much cheaper) and bought a set of Pazzos for them. Be patient and you can get the MCs for quite cheap. Another bonus is that the clutch radial MC (a 15x18 IIRC) lightens up the action too....
