evening fellow vtr owners,
i own a 99 storm, picked it up a week or so ago and when i got to the blokes house, i started it and noticed a little bit of popping and banging on idle, got i back to my house, stripped it down to do some bits and pieces and thought to byself i might aswell change the plugs to see if that eliminates the popping, so new ngk plugs order and fitted ... and it still pops .... not to sure what to do is it supposed to pop a lil bit (first twin) it has high level scorpian cans on it could it be, that theres not a good enough seal on the joins so its sucking in more air?
thanks for your help
Simon

Air leaks on exhaust seals / carb not seated well

you anwsered your own question buddy, its normally to do with air getting into or leaking out of the exhaust, double check all the joins. although the bike will pop and bang abit with aftermarket race cans, has the bike been set up on a dyno?
HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!
Re: popping and banging ....
im not sure if its been on a dyno, will normal exhaust paste be good enough to make a seal? im a car mechanic by trade and am not sure if cars and bikes are different ... i know it sounds silly, but first project and mr haynes doesnt say anything about it ...

If the tank has been lifted or taken off. Check the vacuum hose from the carbs has been connected back up to the tank correctly.stripped it down to do some bits and pieces
On the left hand side of the bike the hose runs from the rear carb along the frame to just behind the left side fuel hose on the fuel tap. Common mistake that one and it will cause it to pop and bang loads. If it's not that then as Wicky says.
You can use a bit of Gun Gum but it does tend to break loose. If you do use some use the Firegum as it has a bit of flex in it. But I rekkon it the vacuum.

Use silicone on the exhaust joints .
Clean and sync the carbs .
How does it ride ?
Is it smooth up to 4k ?

Re: popping and banging ....
Rides really well through the whole range ... when you say a silicone based sealer like rtv?
Re: popping and banging ....
Sorted it out, the clamps from the manifold to the link pipes were loose, new clamps and some blo seal and it sorted it
