The Pipercross Filter

Post by seb421 »

Ok the big sponge air filter

Who's used one and what jets did you run with it?

I would like to get it fitted at some point as its just 50 plus quid of air filter currently sat ontop of a fish tank looking outta place.

Think you need to sort your issues re running before you add anything else....

But if you were getting it jetted, the filter should go on first.
It will allow the engine to run leaner, so jets and air screw are likely to need richening up slightly. But not necessarily, som can stay the same.

It's not as easy as saying "ah, yes, with one of those and such and such cans you need a 182 main front, 185 rear, 48 tubes and a turn and a half on the airscrews".

Engines aren't all the same, and individual engines need individual setting up.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

+1 and as far as jetting goes it's trial and error really and be prepared to take the carbs off and open them up a dozen or so times.

I've got it down to about 20mins now, whipping them off, changing something and putting them on.

hi seb , i use the piper cross filter , much the same as yours , i got a stage 2 jet kit and straight thro pipes obviously, like tony mon said its just trail an error with the jetting mine still runs a bit rich but only noticable on tick over ,an the only reason its running rich is coz of the damn salt air up here , cant get the screws to move enough and must admit to never getting in and around the carbs to clean an lube ! the jet kits will come with easy instructions so go for it , its not like you wont be able to ride the bike even if it aint spot on :biggrin

I wonder where the Piper filter falls into with regards to airflow. Whether it's less or more than a K&N or like the BMC road which is in between The K&N and standard. The filter has a larger coverage area but because it's a sponge type filter would the airflow be equal ish to say the K&N which is a gauze type filter.

What are the cleaning instructions for the Piper? Does it use oil to capture dirt particles or does it rely on the particles getting trapped in the sponge a bit like a fish tank sponge filter. And what's the extra cone shape tube all about? That neither the K&N or BMC have.

hi mate i tried it a while ago with standard jets and it wouldn't get above like 4k with out a struggle it was so lean

Had a Dynojet kit stage 1 for years now but just never got round to fitting it as i didn't want to bugger up the only set of carbs wit the bike being used for the daily commute

what is involved in this stage 2 kit you have?

Going to get some spare carbs asap when i get my refund back on a clothing order
