i miss my vfr800

Post by agentpineapple »

although i love my firestorm, i do miss my old vfr800
i was browsing ebay tonight and came across this one, the same year and colour as my old one, the mileage is a little high maybe, but vfr's were built to cover twice as many miles with no issues, if i was doing a serious amount of touring and could afford a second bike, i'd be putting a sneaky bid in on this one.....

Dam good bikes and I would have had one once. But I think now if I wanted a touring bike to go with my storm it would be a Blackbird.

It's not so bad that VFR, it priced up right for that milage.

I'm not a fan of the Hayabusa, I think it's ugly and would prefer the Blackbird. I found this funny though - didn' know the Japanese had a sense of humour  (From Wikipedia)
Hayabusa (隼?) is Japanese for "peregrine falcon", a bird that often serves as a metaphor for speed due to its vertical hunting dive, or stoop, speed of 180 to 202 miles per hour (290 to 325 km/h), the fastest of any bird.[6][7] In particular, the choice of name was made because the peregrine falcon preys on blackbirds,[8] which reflected the intent of the original Hayabusa to unseat the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird as the world's fastest production motorcycle.[9][10][11] Eventually, the Hayabusa managed to surpass the Super Blackbird by at least a full 10 miles per hour (16 km/h).[4][12]

I like that, that's quite funny. Japanese manufacturers competition for you. In Suzuki's case 10mph faster but the the back end falls off. :eek2 The analogy is quite interesting comparing to birds. I would have classed the Hayabusa as a Vulture, ugly.

10mph faster. I think the Blackbird is quick enough.

A guy I used to work with had a Hayabusa and whenever we talked about bikes he just kept banging on about it's top speed. Nothing else, just that it's the fastest bike. Just bragging rights as he can only legally use just about 1/3 of it. Even on track days I'm sure something lighter and nimbler would be much more fun.

I shouldn't laugh at a fellow bikers misfortune but I couldn't help having a little giggle when I found out he bought the bike new in the winter so stored it in his front room until the spring (he didn't have a garage). A good friend of his told me he used to sit on the bike making bike noises while getting his missus to blow in his face so he could pretend he was riding it.

The first time he took it out (new tyres!) he got about 100 yards, opened it up and the back end lost traction and it bounced down the road.

He now has a B-King. just as bad.....

Though between the 2 he did have a GSX 1400 which I kind of like.

I dont believe for one minute that a vfr is designed to cover more miles with less issues, more touring designed maybe, but no more reliable. I would have a bet that these things are as robust as anything one the road. In fact, the year I bought my first one ( 2002 ) the Storm came no1 overall in the Rider Power survey for reliability. RR and CCT's aside, these things go forever, as long as they aint messed around with by people who think they know better than Honda, the biggest engine maker in the world.

I find the storm quite ok for touring apart from its tank. I'm surprised somebody hasn't designed an aftermarket 30L tank.

Yeah, they are a bit boring, and feel slow compared to a twin. I'd suffer the petrol stops on the Storm rather than ride a VFR. The 12 is meant to be a bit lively though. A mate has a blacky, and rode a VFR12...reckons the VFR felt quicker.

In my opinion having had more than one VFR, they are like a big scooter.
If honda had made the storm with gear driven cams the VFR would never have made the mark it has. Try and imagine a detuned SP1/2 motor in a storm and you'll see where i'm coming from.

Seems alright mate, but I'll have a proper ride tomorrow and have a better idea. Still think most problems are caused by owners rather than original design though. You not out tomorrow ?
