Odd One This....

Post by gissmo50 »

Fitted high rise links and some art cans at the weekend the bike has a dyno jet kit in it from a previous owner,

so the problem is with the baffles out of the exhaust under hard acceleration the bike feels like its cutting out then back fires and then picks up again seems to do it less with the baffles in but im unsure where to start with the problem my head is saying carbs so gonna balance them first and go from there.

anyone else experienced this?

It needs the dynojet kit set up for the new cans I would say. The baffles will change the way the fuelling is delivered, that's all. I would suggest that it is running very weak with the baffles out.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Dynojet kit ( according to their recommendations ) have pretty much one setting accross the board for a standard engine bike with aftermarket cans.

Which is 180 I do belive and two turns out on the air screw
Check your plugs and see what they are like. This should tell you if your running rich or lean.

Yep that's right 180 mains, needle on 4th clip and two turns on mixture. But this is just the base setting to start with that dynojet supply with the kit. And of course the 2 turns on the mixture is dependant on wear and tear and what size pilot jet one has.

Makes you wonder why people would bother having them set up on a rolling road, if that were the case.

well im gonna book her in for a dyno at £40 for a run to just see how she is doing its worth it.
But i feel that there may be more to this it seems to be intermittent fault and if it was a mixture fault it would do it every time and i thought it was WOT i was having the problem and it seems its more prominent at partial throttle to the point the bike stalled on me at a round about today most embarrassing.
Could this be a bad case of carb cough being exacerbated by the freer flowing exhaust i don't know if the tps has been done or when the carbs where last balanced.

I would start with giving the carbs a clean first. You may have a pilot jet/circuit clogged with crap. While your there make a note of what size pilot is in there. Dynojet don't supply pilots but it may have been changed or may not have. I also would not take the word of the previous owner that it has a dynojet kit in it. Best to open the carbs give it all a thorough clean out with carb cleaning spray and make a note of what jet sizes are in there etc.

Here's a link regarding removing the carbs
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... al#p223894

here's one for stripping them down.
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25177

And while the carbs are off you may as well adjust the TPS
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... or#p222504

once the carbs are cleaned and back on the bike they will need syncing.

give the carbs a good clean .
the dyno will only show a full throttle power run .
so it wont show how its running at cruise .
to get the best cruise you need to play with the mixture and if you ain't got 48s slow jets fitted fit them they help a lot .
a good carb sync if they are out will also help .

Standard depends on what year your storm is. According to the workshop manual 45's are standard but a lot of the later models come with a 48.

Anything to do with the 2001 update ??

Whatever the pilot jet is, you've seen the result I got with fitting the DJ kit by the book. It works....simples
