Making stubby cans

Post by pete1781 »

Hi peeps,

So, never attempted taking exhausts
apart before and wondering what to expect, essentially im doing it to make a bit more noise, have a slightly different look and most important to get rid of some scratches that are really to deep to fix.
But I want to keep the engraved writing on the end and need to cut from the inlet end to get rid of the scratches, will this be as easy as doing from the other end?
What will I find when I drill out the rivets and take off the cap and when I put them back together should I reassemble with silicone or something similar, this is what I would use on an exhaust joint normally. Should mention also that they are venom cans and are oval.

Cheers

Pete

what material are the cans made of, carbon fibre is the easiest material to make stubbies from, i know of one trick to get an even straight cut, buy two big jubilee clips, place them next to each other at the correct point you need to make the cut, then you can use a hand saw to make a straight cut
in the future i'd like to buy a pair of carbon cans with minor damage so i could have a go at stubby's, theres a pair of arrow cans on ebay at the mo, that fit the bill.

Cans are alloy I believe bsm, not sure about best way to cut them, will have to try on an end first, im thinking a thin cut off wheel on angle grinder will be best, im not to bad with a grinder so should be fine :-)

Or if you know how to use a hand saw properly just cut in a straight line.

You ideally need someone who has taken Venom cans apart before. Every can will be slightly different but basically you will have a perforated tube in there which will either be welded to the inside of the end cap and slide out with it, or not attached to the cap and will remain in situ. Then your going to have the wadding in there more than likely on the outside of the perforated tube and the outer tube over the whole lot.

This was the inside of my old Microns.

And here's a link for if you want to replace the outer tube or other parts.

Post a pic, without seeing I couldn't say. normally they are riveted together, drill the rivets out pull it apart, cut down reassemble & repack. Drill some new holes & re-rivet up.
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

It depends on whether you have the road legal Microns or race with the removable baffles. I had the road legal so I undone the 4 allen bolts in the end cap, then that pops off. Then you can slide the sleeve off and it ends up looking like my pic above.

So if they are like the ones I had above then to shorten I guess you would have to cut the perforated tube in half, trim it down, trim the tube down and then put it all back together.

You can view more pics of them here http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... ns#p216703

I was considering taking out the second baffle thing or whatever it's called, that you can see inside the perforated tube. How it works is that the exhaust pressure goes through that and bounces of the surface behind the outlet tube and back the other way and out the outlet. So the exhaust pressure moves in a Z pattern through the tube sort off, which is how they silence it I think. Rather than it going straight throw and out.

And yes it would be an easy job to shorten. I don't even think you would have to join the cut perforated tube back together as when the outer tube is on and end cap, it holds it all in place. Though it may rattle so maybe a couple of spot welds would do to hold the two perforated sections back together.
