I thought it was time my bike had its own thread !!

This is how I got it

It was a right heap of junk .
1k later and many mods

modifications are .

suspension / brakes
new standard rear shock 1000 miles ago
5mm rear shock spacer
1992 fireblade forks with weighted springs .
1992 fireblade yokes (trees)
renthal ultra low bars will bar clamps
braided brake lines front and back
braided clutch line

cosmetic

fireblade race front fender
renthal grips
r1 mirrors
hugger
belly pan
under tray
seat cowl
head light kit 100/90 bulb
led stop/tail bulbs
mini indicators
didgi gear indicator(so you can see what gear your in)
lots of stainless steal nuts and bolts

performance

quick action throttle
return throttle cable removed
lightened flywheel
2-1 exhaust with scorpion race can
k&n filter
dyno jet kit
-1 tooth front sprocket
manual ccts
r1 reg/rec
clutch spring washers
tps set to 430 ohms
69000 miles and counting

A nice clean fast black storm


But Its had a hard life so now it's time for a update !

On the list of todo's this winter is

Remove and repair the bodywork.
Respray the bodywork .
Get both subframes powder coated along with other brackets.
Powder coat the wheels and fit new bearings and tyres .
Give the engine and frame a good clean .
Paint the frame satin black .
Tidy up the wiring loom .

That little lot should keep me busy over winter and hope to be back on the road for spring !.

To start I removed the bodywork

And repaired the damaged/missing bits
I used plastex to fix them as its easy to use and clean up .




Then I dropped them at the painters alone with this pic of how I want it .


Then i removed the rear subframe and the front end .


I then gave the frame and engine a good clean .
It was in a right state !


I made a start on preparing the frame for paint(hammerite satin black) I know it's not petrol resistant but it will do for next season as I plan on getting it powder coated when I get a younger replacement engine .

I started of with masking all the places I didn't want to get paint on (xmas wrapping paper was used as its cheap )

then i gave it a light dust coat to begin with so the paint will stick and also give me a better surface once keyed for the next few coats .

To days later and two more coats and it was done .
I just need to leave it now to harden off .


I gave the top yoke a coat of paint to ,so it will match the frame .

Next up while I was waiting for the paint to harden I removed the goodridge brake lines .
They are the older type without the protective coating .
As I'm on a tight budget so new ones are out of the question plus I have some shrink wrap And thought why not .

It wasn't easy to do but it worked and now they shouldn't scratch the new paint either on the frame or the newly painted fairing .

The front forks were also cleaned and peeped and given two coats of the same satin black paint .



Next up is to remove the rear wheel and swingarm also the suspension linkages .
Then off with the front subframe
And get them to the powder coaters to be done in satin black .

today i refitted the front end



its now back to a rolling chassis so i can get it out of the garage and turn it around .
this will help me take the rear end out as i will have more space .
and i need to give the garage a tidy up and make some space out the way for the bodywork when i get it back next week .

You have given the engine a good scrub Is the swingarm going Black as well. You could also do the rearsets.

It's coming along at a nice pace.

Cheers mate .
Swing arm is coming off on Monday and removing the bearings then its getting put in a big box along with the sub frames and some other little stuff then taken to the powder coaters :-) .
I want to get the big jobs done before Xmas as that then will give me 8-10 weeks to get all the little stuff done .
Tyres and wheels will be done last (early February)
Rear sets I hope to find some race ones for it tbh so I'm leaving them standard for now .
Yep I'm pleased how its coming on so far but it's a long winter

Cant wait for the first pictures of the new paint job. When are you expecting the sprayer to get them finished?

They should be don't sometime the coming week :-).
But they won't be fitted till end of February .
As I don't want to damage them .
I will take some pics of them in the disassembled stage so you will need to use your imagination till then .
But knowing myself being a impatient bugger I will trial fit them after I rebuild the rear end .

had a few hours in the garage today
first i had to get the bike out so i could do a bit of tidying up



onced the garage was done i put it back in front end first so i could work on the rear .
a few grazed knuckles later the rear end was off .



the amount of crap on the back of the engine and on the swing arm was unbelievable
god bless wd40 as it made it easier to shift the sh1t .

abit of a relief as the suspension linkages and bearings are all in very good condition .
and the same with the swing arm bearings .

after a message from flatline regarding powder coating the swingarm i am now undecided whether to powder coat it or hammerite it

if you do get to do yours plan a long winter for it as things that you thought wouldnt need looking at more than likely will .
and waiting for parts can take weeks

I don't rate powder coating as being that good. A well prepared, primed and painted surface can be a lot more hard wearing. Especially if a two pack epoxy paint is used.

You been sniffing WD again. This thread is giving me inspiration to get on and do my bike. The only problem is I have to work out in the open and I have a feeling it's all going to cost me a lot more as my linkages and bearing are going to need tidying or replacing. Same with head bearings, forks need new springs,oil etc.

Hey Lloydie, I`ve had a copy of that picture saved since I first came across it. That green looks the absolute dogs, especially with the numberboards painted up the way they are. I had thought of the same colour for my SP project (or, dare I say it, Blue...... )
I too look forward to seeing the painters results. Should look really good when it`s finished

yep that pic stuck with me from the first time i seen it too .

carl its easier to do it over a few winters that way you don't notice the cost as much .
and if you know what you want to do then get the spares over the year so you have them all ready to go . and if you have two bikes as you do carl then it'll be easier to take it off the road in summer when its warm and dry
