From Supermoto to the Dirt!

Post by geodude »

As you know, I recently bought a DR-Z400. The main reason for it was to replace the DR350. I bought the DR in Supermoto Trim and now have the tools to convert it over.

I started the work on it today.

So far I have removed everything in this pic

Here it is partially naked

And here it is nearly finished.

All thats left to do, and to be honest, it's the bit i've been dreading, is swapping over the wheels, chain and sprockets. I'll be doing that at the weekend now I have the tools for it (Chain extractor, riveter and grinder.)

Wish me luck

Stuff that, I always used to use the same gearing on my XR whether on sm wheels or knobblies. Saved messing about with the chain. Also used to keep the naff bodywork on it regardless so it was just a case of swapping wheels and front brake assembly (a complete caliper, brake line to lever jobbie)

It doesn't look much different apart from more Yellow and a new seat. Go easy on the chain riveting. I have bent many of pins over the years with the cheap chain riveters. :eek2 One day I will get around to buying a Whale.

I am with Jazz on that one. Leave the off road plastics on ..(ok i might let you swap the front mudgaurd back and forwards) and just swap the wheels when you want to go off road.... Then the good ones stay good for when you sell it :D

I'll probably do that from now on.

@carl, i'll probably be using a split link from now on. Definitely off at the least.

New chain and sprockets :)

I've gone from a 15 to a 14 on the front. I am now able to launch comfortably in 3rd gear

Finally got out in the dirt.

I like it. Much better suited to my shortassness albeit somewhat heavier then the 350 :P
