cleaning a small rusty fuel tank?

Post by lumpyv »

hello all. the questions in the title, i mean the inside of the tank.
i have read that you can put a handfull of nuts (off bolts) in with either petrol or kerosine and give it a good shaking? ? what do you reckon. i guess i would go with petrol option?
also if i get a load of crap out and think its ok would you just leave it or are you supposed to "treat" the inside in some way or other?

cheers

It depends on how bad it is really. Don't forget you have the filter inside the tank to prevent rust getting down into your carbs. But too much crap on the filter will affect the fuel flow. I'm not sure about putting nuts or bolts inside the tank you could have a hell of a time getting them back out even with a bendy magnetic pick up tool. I would use a treatment of some kind. Not sure what though, there is so much choice on the market and I don't have much experience with rust treatment for fuel tanks.

i'm confused
if you want to clean the inside of a petrol tank, and you want to use petrol, but surely petrol was in it in the first place and that didn't stop it from becoming rusty????
for nuts and bolts i've used a tub filled with wd40 liquid, not the cheapest option but it works very well, also use an old tooth brush, as for the inside of a fuel tank, i wouldn't know where to start, i'm sure there will be a special product on the market for the job. the hardest thing is to fully empty a storms tank, because both exits sit on a raised lip, its a right pain in the butt....
good luck fella....

It's the petrol that can make them rusty in the first place over time. How about vinegar as a cheap option or coka cola  it works down toilets and sinks for limescale. A couple of litres of cola is cheap as well.

Bought some stuff from Halfords (no really!) a few years ago and it's great, just don't mix it as it says, I trebled the mix and it worked great. Can't remember what it's called now but worth a look

well that's difficult to say? I don't think its going to be too bad if I give it a good shaking with some petrol and some nuts or whatever.
its certainly not rusting through in any way.
