Trade in value

Post by Miztaziggy »

Is there a version of something like Glass Guide that dealers use?

I have been looking at this:
http://www.wisebuyers.co.uk/index.jsp?g ... 6&x=51&y=3

Says trade value for mine is £3789 but private good is £4470, seems a massive difference. I haven't bought from a dealer or traded in before so not sure how these things work, but do they make you an offer based on the book then try to shaft you by finding every little stone chip?

Also what's the likelihood of getting a decent deal / discount on another bike when trading in?

Thinking of changing bike? Really have no idea how dealers' work out how much they're gonna rip you off, but I suppose you can always haggle using that as evidence of the bikes' worth and see what they do? Do it around a few different dealers and find which reacts the most positively to it

Dealers shaft you a treat

the car dealership I worked at had someone trade in an audi a5 for a mondeo (why would you?) And the profit margin from the mondeo combined with the profit they would make on the a5 after giving him a sh1t trade in price was going on for 10k, they were almost laughing about it

You're always going to be better of selling your bike privately. A lot of owners can't be bothered to do that, or don't want the hassle that sometimes goes with a private sale. Personally I would always try to sell a bike privately first.

You have to remember dealers have overheads, plus they will need to service a bike before it goes out, and will also need to cover any faults (in most cases) that could pop up just after you've bought the bike. All these things have to be taken out of the profit unlike a private seller. The only good thing about buying from a dealer is you do have some come back (as I mentioned) if something goes wrong soon after you buy it, unlike a private sale whereas in most cases you bought on a sold-as-seen basis.

I used to look at "Parkers" price guide for bikes, not sure if they're still going :?:

Lol, sounds like a bargain, but no :D

I always thought that dealer prices and trade in values would be pretty shite, but if the values on that page are anything to go by, basically they would buy my bike for £3700 and sell it for £6100.... 8O 8O

I did try to haggle a dealer when I was looking for my CBR. I found a dealer in Leeds selling a 2006 blade and a 2004 CBR 600 F for Sarah. They were up for £5500 and £3000. I tried to get him down to £7500 for the pair but he wasn't having any of it, he basically said he would knock £50 off but that's it.

I was just wondering whether or not it is worth looking for a bike at a dealer or not. If the trade in values were ok and / or you could get a decent discount then I would probably look, but if not, ill probably just do it privately.

The only plus side to a dealer I can see right now is the finance option available. If I were to buy from a dealer, I would go for something else and just pay the extra over a year or 2.

Pop your bike on Auto trader and see if you get any hits.
If you don't get the interest you can always fall back on a trade in. At the very least stay off of Ebay, it's just a load of folk trying to get something for nothing as far as the secondhand bike sales are concerned.

Good luck

I sold my last 3 bikes on e-bay and had fairly good experiences. I put my storm on there on an auction and it went for more than I expected which was nice :)

Although I suppose it's true, I did get a lot of messages and calls with silly offers.

Yeah I usually get an offer within the first couple of hours for some stupid amount of money.

I think I am going to go private and take my chances on e-bay with a classified ad. I get 28 days for £15 which isn't too bad. Ill start it at £4750 probably and see what offers come in.

If it doesn't sell, ill try autotrader but I am always a bit reluctant as it is so expensive to advertise in there. Might have a look at MCN or something see how much that is.

Just fancy a change. The blade is really nice, it's quick and it handles like a beast, but I want something a bit different.

Still not decided 100% what yet. It was going to be a big bang R1 with a couple of grand put on finance, but I have been reading some stuff about how weird the power curve is and that the top end isn't as powerful or smooth as a blade. Maybe I might stretch the couple of grand and go for a Ducati. Not sure yet.
