working on rear end

Post by TonyW650 »

Hi guys
Got a question, whats the beat way of getting the rear end of the ground and supported so I can strip the rear linkages out and clean them up and fit grease nipples
Brains gone blank ans just cant think, is it ok to put a trolley jack under sump or what?

Abba stand, small stool under the sump or take the rear seat fairings off, use a ladder in the upside down V shape and use a strap through the sub frame to lift it off the floor. Depends what you have available to use.

All the above work perfectly, however the Abba stand is by far the safest & if you want the front off the ground at the same time then a bottle jack & 1/2 inch ply under the sump does the trick.

If you haven't an Abba stand,
Trolley jack on a block of wood under the engine, or better still sit the engine on a railway sleeper.

The only problem with the Abba stand is that if you mount it of the Abba stand standard mounting point, the swingarm! then you can not remove the swingarm. Your going to want to remove the swingarm if doing all the linkages. It makes it a hell of a lot easier.

I would suggest using the Abba stand but mod it to fit off the engine mounting which allows you to remove the complete rear end.

This makes a great pivot point (see saw) and if you wanted to work on the front end at the same time, then a couple of bricks under the sump works well.
