bike won't start

Post by agentpineapple »

this is really pissing me off now.
since getting back to blighty, i haven't had a chance to ride my bike, anyways, i went to start it up on thursday but it wouldn't start, turning over fine but not firing up, so on friday i checked the basics, i made sure all the hose's were on the tank, i made sure the the plugs were sparking, i checked all the fuse's, generally made sure all the connections were ok. but still nothing.
today carlos popped over and we went a bit further, we took the airbox off and checked that fuel was getting into the carbs, all good there. i put two brand new iridium sparkplugs in. rechecked the spark, still good, swapped over the reg/rec, it wasn't that,
we even swapped the two ecu's/cdi's for spares to see if that was the problem, still nothing.
we took the fairing off and checked the wiring, we swapped the fuel cut off switch over, we bypassed the clutch switch.
the only thing we never tried was the sidestand switch(because the early model has 3 wires, but the late model has 2 wires, so i couldn't use my spare)
and the pulse pick up thingy in the clutch cover, because we couldn't be arsed with taking everything apart again.
now it seems like all the componants are there, fuel/spark, but its almost like theres an immobiliser, which there isn't, like something is cutting it out.
very frustrating day, all i want to do is go for a little ride, i can't even sell the bike now, until i get this sorted.
so has anyone got any idea's?
or has anyone got a late model sidestand switch i could borrow to try and trouble shoot that part.
is there anything we've missed, something simple.
its very strange as the bike was running fine when it was last used a week or so ago.
i'm praying there isn't a broken wire in the loom somewhere.... :(
i really need to sort this out and sell the bike so i can get started on the next one, any idea's guys n girls........?

Marty, can`t you just unplug the sidestand switch and short out the loom connector to prove or disprove.....?

Unplug it and bridge the wires .

If you have spark and fuel and are it should start .

according to carl, the switch has 3 wires and he wasn't sure about bridging it, the late model only has two wires, i've checked ebay and i can get one for £7, it might not even be that tho. its very odd, if the sidestand switch was at fault, would the bike still spin over?

Good point, if there's fuel+spark+compression it should run

I hate that bike.  Which wire do you bridge on the sidestand switch, is it the two green ones and what's the third one :confused I have only seen sidestand switches with two wires and it's a simple bridge to bypass. Oh never mind I shall look up the wiring diagram. Saying that though it does appear to work in the sense of the bike wont even turn over when in gear with sidestand down, Where as it does when not in gear.

It's got a good spark to both cylinders, it's getting fuel, the bike turns over yet wont start. Checked the clutch switch and cut off switch. I don''t think it's the sidestand but haven't ruled it out totally yet. Fuses have all been checked. It's now doing my head in..... And I have a horrible feeling it's some stupid electrical fault like a break/short in the wiring loom somewhere. :(

The third wire is probably some thing to do with the 'cut out if its in gear with the side stand down' party trick. But that would only cut the spark

Well this is it, if the ECU was swinging about loose then it might have put some stress on the wiring connectors/wires. I'm going to study the wiring diagram tonight take a test light and multimeter with me next time. I'm so pissed off, and if I'm pissed off the big man must be REALLY pissed off. :( I thought I was done with that monster.
