Petrol stabilisers.. bike storage in Winter

Post by Saintsman27 »

Hi m8's
Winter storage for my Firestorm .. anyone here use Petrol stabalisers added to
petrol left in the motorcycle in winter storage , I know it is possible to
empty/drain fuel tanks but when this is not the case.. as mine..I have been
advised by pal to doctor the unleaded with a stabaliser to prevent gumming of carbs
and maintenance .. plenty ads on Flee bay but has anyone used a best brand
or give any good advice here..thanx

i think you can buy a zinc pellet which helps it just sits inside the tank
i need to read up on this again
you could clamp the petrol pipe then run the bike til the carbs are empty
told you not to but oh no you knew better

Yeah, to stop the carbs gumming up, just clamp the pipes, or even shut off the petcock, and run the bike until it cuts out, then try it a few times more...

Other than that, I just top fill the tank, to keep condensation to a minimum, and leave it, but that's with Swedish fuel additives, so might not work for you guys...

Also sort of best done in frost free storage... Plus getting the tires of the ground, and disconnecting or otherwise tending to the battery is a great idea... That's about my whole routine, apart from a sheet over it... It's worked for 10+ years, so I'm not changing it until I need too... (Well, 5+ years perhaps since the other years I've had it in a million pieces...)

I had to leave mine for several months last year owing to th bad winter and a foot operation. Neither bike was started for 2-3 months, but didn't have any problems. Usually over wintertime I start them up and run them to temperature about evry 3 weeks and have never had any gumming problems.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

same for me last year - damp garage furred it up cosmetically a bit, but running it every couple of weeks kept the internals nice and functional :D

my winter storage routine if I am not going to start the bike.

Fill fuel tank to brim.
run the bike till hot, when silencers are cool enough put plastic food bags over end with elastic band to stop condensation.
when cool, spark plugs out and a little engine oil down both cylinders, turn over by hand, and plugs back in.
drain carbs of fuel.
remove battery and put on on battery conditioner.
put wood under front wheel to keep off concrete.

Simply storing your bike inside rental storage is not enough. You have a lot of things to do with your vehicle before keeping them in storage. Some storage providers, like Capital Self Storage in Hume, facilitates such types of cleaning services to their customers. But if your provider do not facilitate, you should doit yourself.
