fork spring spacers

Post by Ckennedy »

Does anyone know the outside diameter required for the spacers used when fitting new fork springs. When I fitted mine I had to use what ever I could lay my hands on to use as well as the original spacers due to the new springs being shorter than the old ones :?

So if anyone can tell me the outer diameter needed for thge spacers so I can get some tube ordered up I would be rather greatful

Be careful, as some replacment fork springs don't use the spacer at all.

But if it helps I have several spare spacer tubes and can send you one or two over.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Cheers tony. Without the spacers its impossible to set up the pre load. What length spacers do you have? Going to need something 110mm. If the standards are 95mm like Macdee says then I need another 15mm ontop of that. Maybe another 20mm. Failing that I'll try and find a length of tube and cut it down.

The spacers have large washers either side of the spring to separate the parts and give them a solid base to push against.
Just use a few extras, they are about 2.5-3mm thick each.

Good thinking. I was hoping just to have one solid spacer, save a little weight. At the moment that added spacers that were made when the springs were changed ages a go there quite hefty bits of steel. Fit perfectly but heavy.

Having got anywhere at the moment. Been to busy with other bits I having had chance to search for any pipe to cut down. I shall try to find some over the next week and get it ordered if I find any. Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgot

new springs being shorter than the old ones
Which springs are you using then and how long are they as the originals are quite short.

The TOTAL length of Spring + Spacer (without the two washers) should be 410mm on a VTR.
Hope this helps

Thanks Rodger that will help.

Carl: not sure what the length of these springs are but they were shorter than the old ones, not by loads but a bit. I phoned the place I got them from, they phoned there supplier and they said they were right. Maybe I should have received a bit of spacer bar with them, I don't know but had to mattle something together. Honestly they have felt alright since I done them last year but its just something I want to sort now.
