Fork lowers colour match

Post by Watty »

Does anyone know the closest colour match and best paint for fork lowers (silver) :? Sending them to roger in the next week or so and want to freshen them up before refitting.

Try silver.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

If painting the lowers with each fork leg as a complete unit don't forget the little bit that lips around the top of the leg by the oil seal/dust seal. Pry the dust seal up and off out the way, but don't get paint on the inside the leg. You should etch prime them first for best adhesion and longevity of the paint. As for colour...sorry I'm with Tony, Silver!!!! Decide on which paint you want to use first. It needs to be pretty tough to withstand stone chips.

Wire wool, degrease, hammerite smooth silver. Nothing else reqired. Etch primer is not needed if you paint over whats there already.

That'll be spray hammerite Lee? And it's a close match to original silver?

+1 Hamerite Smooth. You can get a good finish if it's warm enough and a quality brush.

Not only hammerite'd mine but also adding fork gaiters to help keep stations cleaner.

Paintwork needs a light rub and recoat but needs another three weeks to cure off before paint can be added.

Well yes adding gaiters to the station will clear it out in no time.

Good idea using gaiters  What size did you use. Have you got a link for them.

Yes Hammerite is not problem free.

Gaiters or as they call them Gaitors were from Ebay - bertrum 4572 - TRIUMPH BSA NORTON BRITHISH BIKE FORK GAITORS £14 + postage.

My PC is sulking so I can't see how to copy link from Ebay and it won't show Flash Player in IE but will in Firefox
Grrrrrrrr.

I thought I wrote stansions but may have written s-t-a-n-t-I-o-n-s which spell checker corrected to stations. OK I give in they are Fork Legs

Clean the fork leg, add a coating of ACF50, fix the gaiter with nice thick zip ties, job done. A bit 'utility' for a 'classic bike' these days but less bother than getting the legs re-chromed and IMHO looks better than slightly rusty forks.
