Crash protectors

Post by Virt »

I currently have a set of crash protectors on my 'storm.

(These photos are over a year old, sorry  )

Problem is, being relatively tall-ish, that my knees are constantly trying to be where they are. I've given up on trying to avoid them because nothing works, I always end up banging my knees on them..

So I'm thinking of removing them, is there any other way I can try and protect the bike if/when I drop the heavy fooker?

All I can find are these Fork bobbins and these Swing arm bobbins. Will they be anywhere near decent enough to stop my completely wrecking the bodywork? I'm quite doubtful, but these crash protectors are driving me insane.

Swing arm and fork bobbins wont save the fairing

you need to fit the ones that go straight through the engine mount bolt .... but you have to put a hole in the fairing.

They're like £100 too, for the privilege of hurting your bike

Those look the same as mine, Motrax DHM. I'm 6`4" and don't have issues with them. I think most others
are lower still, as they pierce the bodywork, and to be honest I doubt any protection measures would be completly successful.
Just don't drop it!!

I have no idea what they are

I'll be checking them when I get home though to check.

Dropping it is not on my to-do list, I can assure you

If you do drop it.. sacrifrice your leg in the name of Storm preservation, it will cost a packet to fix your fairings but your leg will heal for free!

Kidding obviously. We could do with copying my frame protector brackets, then I'm sure there would be plenty of people happy to raise the slider up and out of knees reach.

Any crash protection is only going to solve so much. There is an argument that these mushrooms grab in a crash and you end up with a tumbling bike rather than slide damage.

Well done jamie, that's what I was looking for.

Here you go YMV as you have lost your computer abilities.

and no rearsets wont save you. Crash protection is like a deterrent and does not guarantee no damage. A bit like having an alarm does not guarantee a bike not being stolen.

I've heard of that before, I had them on the Hornet and they did a good job a (couple :( ) of times. That's the reason I kept them on the VTR, I knew I was going to take them off eventually cause they'd piss me off, but I thought I'd see how long it'd last. I just don't want to completely wreck the bodywork too, paint ain't cheap :(

I'm at work Carl, and since when have I ever used the Search function? Normally I just ask questions so stupid that no one has ever had to ask them before

Oh they'll definitely be removed, it's just that "when" depended on whether I could find any replacements.. Or whether it was worth it..

I dunno, I'll continue browsing through them on eBay. I don't want to drill through fairings for the R&G ones, and the others are just mahoooosive mushrooms it seems.

I do like these ones : Clicky Linky

Not sure where abouts they actually go though

EDIT : nah, screw them. They're in an even worse position
