Which 12V air compressor / tyre pump?

Post by sirch345 »

Who can recommend an half descent 12 volt tyre pump / compressor :?: Mine needs replacing. It needs to be suitable for car tyres as well as motorcycles and have a pressure gauge built in.

From the reviews I've been reading most of them are rubbish 8O

Any suggestions guys :?:

Ok I know its a bit pricey but it will do everything & also boasts a 240 volt inverter. We have one at work & they really do what they boast.

Thanks Kev for you input, I like the idea of owning one of those big boys, and a recommendation is usually the way to go, but right now I'm sorry to say my budget won't stretch that far

Chris I have something like this...

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... compressor

Easy enough to whip off the ciggy plug & put on some croc type clips for running off the battery but then you may have a cig type plug fitted anyway.

I only use mine on the car, for the bike I use a stirrup type pump.

IMO the 12v ones would struggle to pop a tyre onto beads not enough oomph. OK for top ups but then so is the stirrup pump. Don't rely on the gauge on them either check it with a proper pressure gauge.

Thanks Mac for your input

A good idea with the crocodile clips.

No, I wouldn't think or expect a 12V mini compressor to pop a tyre out on it's beads, for that you'd really need a compressor with it's own reservoir/tank. If I've needed to do that I used to bung the wheel in the car and off to my local filling station to use their compressor.

I appreciate the tip on not relying on a built in gauge, although that is some thing I'm aware of.

I use a Airmaster compressor like this http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... igerteiger connected to a Draper pressure gauge http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Draper-Air-Ty ... 1111219892. Good and accurate enough for bicycle tires but I always double check with a proper gauge when doing the VTR's tyres.

Very nice Wicky 8) No I don't want to go to that expense, plus a little light portable one would be more suited for me now. Also I can leave it in the car.

I'd be honestly gobsmacked if that 18 quid ebay one is any good, it says it does 150psi which is over 10bar Haha

If you need any compressor or air system bits message me and ill see what I can do (I work as an engineer for a compressor company)

Cheers Wicky for the links and trying to help
The problem is, if you look up most of those you've listed on the Amazon UK site and view the feedbacks they are pretty shocking for most of them.
I put a thread up on here hoping I might get a recommendation of a good pump, that was all I'm really after. I know I've had some good recommendations so far, but for items above my limited budget unfortunately :)

I think Callum has hit the nail on the head, you get what you pay for to a degree. Although after saying that my old compressor was made in China (like most of them are) and did last for many years.

Thanks for the offer Callum  I'm only really after a reasonable mini portable compressor now, not a full system around the workshop.

I go down the garage where there's FREE air, but I do keep a paddock hand pump in my shed in case it's too flat to ride safely or going to damage the wheel.

That is an option I know Carl :)

If I can't find an half descent 12V compressor, perhaps a portable tank like the one in this link that I can fill at my local garage will suffice

Chris your link is US only, try this one... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIP-06298-Por ... 1c3473f0c4

For that much you may as well buy a small compressor IMO be more versatile surly.
