Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
I'm looking into purchasing an impact wench. Now compressors are out of the question as I don't have the space for that unfortunately. So I'm looking at either electric or battery operated. My instincts tell me that electric will be the more superior in power and I wont have to worry about going to use the gun only to find out the battery needs charging.
I have a budget for around £100 so I'm looking at the lower end of the scale but that market is like a minefield and I'm still toying with either electric or battery. This does not mean that I wont go and buy a 2nd hand Snap on one if one came up at the right price. I am a bit of an impulse buyer at times even if that means getting into debt. Sometimes. Lack of sense overrules brain.

I think I may be dreaming a bit here. I shall have an argument with myself now
Are the electric ones really powerful enough to remove, say, 150lb ft with ease. Is it worth me considering a battery operated one or should I forget about that idea straight away and go for the electric.
I have narrowed down my search and would like your opinions on the following. Has anyone had experience with these. Is there one anyone could recommend.
My favourite so far as the price is right and it gets good reviews on the net is the Clarke electric. It also comes with a few impact sockets which saves me buying them separate at this stage. My gut feeling it telling me this is the one to get.

They also do a cordless version

The following boasts about the RPM but has a lower Max Torque.
Which is more important RPM, Max Torque or the Impact Rate.

This one seems interesting, looking at the specs and may be better than the Clarke. It's a German company so may even be made there. Don't know but the listing implies it by mentioning quality.

Read some bad reviews on the Sealey battery one which surprised me considering the cost. It apparently does not have the real world power they say it has.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-Cordle ... 43b35a936d
Maybe worth considering for the price and it comes with two batteries and a nice selection if sockets.

The beast. A little overkill me thinks

First tough bolt I will be undoing is the flywheel bolt and this is needed for that I figured it's an excuse to buy another tool and it will come in handy for other things like Clutch, Axle nuts, Swingarm etc. It's one of those things that is always useful when you really need it.

Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
buy it tomorrow and bring it round on Saturday, I think you can get the Clarke one across the road at machine mart.....

a £5 more than the one you listed, but you wouldn't have to wait for it, and we can do the flywheel this weekend...

I'll be getting this one http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... act-wrench
Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
Yes a mate of mine has one and it's great. Battery ones are good but you need to spend £250 and for occational use it's too much.lloydie wrote:I'll be getting this one http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... act-wrench

My 2p worth
I don't know anything about impact wrenches so can't advice you there Carl. However electricity V battery power, having been using plenty of power tools, (both electric and battery powered) in the building trade for many years, I will say if you're pretty sure your uses will involve using it where there is an electricity supply (mains power), then forget the battery powered ones. Battery powered power tools will cost more for the same tool as mentioned, and I'm not sure how well batteries will last when not used on a regular basis. Plus replacement batteries are not cheap, especially 24V batteries.

Why not not a big long breaker bar and an extra length of scaffold tube? No batteries required.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
Because the flywheel moves when you want to undo or tighten it
Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
And you're not going to be putting any strain on the transmission or stretching final drive chain if you put a piece of wood through the back wheel with it in gear. Mind you you could use your suggestion Wicky if you lock the flywheel instead like AMcQ did

Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
I have one of them (3ft Snap On torque wrench/breaker bar) but that don't work on the flywheel. Not without me putting excess pressure on components stopping it from spinning.
I don't want anything too powerful.

Interesting vid here showing the workings of an impact gun.

It's looking like my gut instinct is right then and the Clarke electric one is the one to get.

I have the Snap-on batt powered one, it will undo lorry wheel nuts it's an excellent buy. It does cost a bit tho but is well worth it as you get two battery's and they last.
Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
Yours for 800 quid can't remember if that's with or without VAT either way far to expensive when companies like milwalkie (sp) make one just as good with same warrentee for less than half the price. Four your uses Carl I'd say a mains powered one. That one Lloyd posted (which I showed him) would be idealDelano.l wrote:I have the Snap-on batt powered one, it will undo lorry wheel nuts it's an excellent buy. Re: Which Impact Wrench/Rattle Gun to Get
My Engineers have had KOBE ( from cromwells and there crap) and makita but the best are the latest 18v rechargeable De Walt ones, there not cheap though but are very good, small and have good battery like. If however i was buying one for home use i would have a corded one. Your not that far from a socket are you?.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!
