starter solenoid buggered

Post by scoobie_sore_paws »

well looks like it might be the starter solenoid that is dead not the reg rec!!

when trying to start I get a clicking noise from it but only turns over once if that. Bypassed straight to batt and turns over. Manwell says likely dead solenoid...might explain struggle to start and then no start even after a run. Batt seems ok with 12v on the multimetre but electrics not my thing.
Took starter off and cleaned up bolt and looked ok put all back and then cleaned rr and connectors with batt on trickle chg for couple hours and she started yesterday so thought woohoo might have been dodgy connection but then the above today :x
Honda chg £95 for a new one so want your collective wisdom before I go there....does this sound like a dead one to you guys?
alternatively does anyone have one for sale or know if another would do the job at less wonga?

would this do?

Unusual for starter solenoid to fail as it's normally is the R/R, battery or corroded starter bolt.

For £16 (slightly cheaper ones on the bay of fleas) easily worth it to rule it out. Still how old is your battery and what kind of R/R have you got?
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

not sure how old the battery is but is a motobatt mbtx16u lights and ignition come up bright. starter bolt was fine no corrosion took starter off and all looked good inside with no corroded parts.
the R/R is a finned SH693-12 not sure how to check if it is ok tho

bought a solenoid for £14 so will see what that does if anything. wasn't prepared to spend £95 to find out.

The solenoid is not usually a problem, so it'll be interesting to see if the new one fixes the problem.
When you bypassed the solenoid did you use the main cable from the bike or a length of heavy-duty cable?

The cable can often be the culprit.....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Scooby I have a spare in the MacCave, PM me your addy & I'll bung it in the post.

Try it to see if it cures the fault.

If it doesn't post it back, if it does keep it & furnish me with beer or Scooby snack tokens, the value of which we can discuss...
