Riding her home
Riding her home
Morning all
Going to pick up my storm tomorrow and panicking over the cct's. She's showing 30k on the clocks.I have new tensioners on the way but could any one suggest the best way to minimise the chances of the engine going pop. I have about a 30 mile motorway ride home. Any help much appreciated.
Cheers

pick it up with a trailer....
just kidding buddy, there's a 99.9% chance you'll be fine, just be aware of death rattle, if you think you can hear it, pull the clutch in and coast to a halt and of course turn the bike off.

HEY YOU GUYS!!!!!!
Re: Riding her home
In a van
. They've been known to fail under all conditions/revs/speeds mate
But you got to get her home and people have been known to run oem tensioners and never fail! It's called cct roulette

SH#T HAPPENS!!!!!!!!
Re: Riding her home
Ha ha though that might be the case
. Oh well best get there early and push her home

Re: Riding her home
As Watty says, you have to get it home mate. The problem seems to be more prolific on bikes that aren't regularly used and are stored for extended periods.
I felt the same as you when I bought mine but rode it from York to Hertford and around for 2 weeks before I fitted manuals to it. There's no guarantees i'm afraid.

Re: Riding her home
If you're lucky the bike may have had the Stopper Mod done. If it has you can't tell by looking at the CCT bodies.
Wishing you well in getting her home okay,
Chris.

Re: Riding her home
I read a few things in another topic on here that supposedly helps prevent failure. Don't warm the bike up on the side stand, or even let it idle on the side stand, only run it upright. And don't use excessive engine braking, use the brakes.
I only rode the bike twice before doing the stopper mod, and I still don't run it on the side stand. When getting on with riding I don't worry about them now but I still have manuals coming (once Bazza makes some more!).

Personally I agree with Watty it's roulette, But I wouldn't worry too much as what's the worst that can happen.

Re: Riding her home
Good luck ... 1.Make sure the engine oil level is between the two marks on the window.with VTR upright ..
level towards the top mark is good ..top up if required .. 2.. the back CCT which you can see ,, just check it is not loose
or weeping around the joint .. 3front CCT well thats out of site M8tey unless you take the tank and air filter off for a look .
. if they are loose..do not use/ride ride it ... then its a transport.. a van/bike trailer/ small lorry....
hey but you will be ok if it starts runs sweet go for it .. dont flog it though through the cogs M8. Check the wheels are true
and spin freely b4 you travel .. if you can ... best of luck.... I am sure all is good ..

Re: Riding her home
Well that's a bit hard to do with standard auto's unless you remove the bolt/cap on the end and stick a CCT key or screwdriver in to check for any play. Best not to touch it at all really as this may end up making it weaker by playing with it. Anyhow it's the front that generally fails and like you said this is not as accessible.the back CCT which you can see ,, just check it is not loose
As far as everything else goes...good advice.

Anyways if it does pop. All can be fixed & there is enough knowledge on this site to see you through.
Re: Riding her home
Stop it, everyone.
The bike won't explode, go bang, make any odd noises or anything.
Considering that CCT's fail once and once only, often once in 50 or 60 thousand miles, the chances of it happening on this particular journey is one in quite a lot, so ride the damn thing, ring its neck, enjoy, but get them sorted before they get you.
And enjoy!

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Riding her home
Agree. I ran mine for 2yrs before I read about the problem, and then 2 yrs more before I bothered to do the stopper mod.tony.mon wrote:Stop it, everyone.

Chances are very high that you will be ok
