How much This bike worth...?

Post by Shauned71 »

Hello everybloody... After some honest advice if you would be so kind. Nearly finished putting my bike together and will be sticking it up for sale asap. After a rough idea of value. Have looked on ebay, plenty of bikes on there but ofc often what they are advertised for and what they sell for are 2 different things. Obviously I would like as much as poss for the bike but at the same time I want to price it to sell.
As a few will know, I bought the bike last year as a non-runner and was intending on stripping it while taking any good bits worth having for my bike. As it was i had the bike running the next day, all I have found is a dodgy wire at the rear under the seat.

While the bike looks nice I won't say it's mint... I have splashed a coat of fresh paint over it but i haven't put the effort into it as I would if I was doing a job for someone. Did get a little carried away and had a few runs around the lower areas of side fairings and on the rear panel where it turns under. Have flatted most of the runs out so there isn't anything that stands out like a sore thumb. I have a nice set of black wheels that i will be putting on, also have tank decals on the way. There is a fair bit of life left in pads/discs chain/sprockets etc New oil/filter, new clutch/brake fluid. Thanks to Mac will soon be swapping out the old R/R. New MOT.

The tricky bit... bike showing just under 22k but lack of history means I can not verify this. Reg doc says bike first registered in 1998 but also says imported to UK 2008 Clocks are in MPH so assuming a past clock change. What I consider to be tell tale signs makes me think the bike isn't high mileage though. Looking at the lower parts of the engine, couple places around the oil pipes etc... they all look tidier/cleaner than on my bike.. but what do I know lol

Any thoughts will be appreciated :-)

storms are so hard to put a value on, have you checked it's mot history on the internet?
I reckon £1100 to £1300 is a fair price.

Nah it's worth more than that. At the end of the day you try and get as much as you can for it. You never know there may be someone who happens to be local that is in need of a bike urgently and willing to pay whatever your asking. If you have no intrest or difficulty selling it, then lower the price.

Yes, did check online.. previous MOT's shown only go back to 2010 and the mileage online matches what is shown on the last MOT. There seems to be a gap between import date and first MOT.

What I had in mind price wise was £1200.. or at least that's what I was hoping to get but wasn't sure if that was realistic or not. Seen plenty of ads online but some make me think it ain't worth it and then I see what some folk ask for their bikes and it makes me think I should stick price up lol but being realistic, if i could get £1200 then i'd be a happy bunny. I haven't gone overboard with the bike... besides the obvious I have tried to keep it origianl looking ie simply cleaned and polished what is there rather than spending money trying to bling it up. The only other thing I could do... if I could find cheap link pipes i do have a set of ART cans on my bike which i could put on it but tbh I don't really want to spend any more money on it.

Would be honest Carl.. would love more £££'s if i could get it.. I mean who wouldn't, do want as much as poss but don't want to be lumbered with it for too long because the money off this will allow me to sort my bike out plus give me some spending money for this years TT's.

I have looked about for inspiration trying find anything i can do to the bike to make it more appealing but again still keeping it looking as a nice normal bike that some can buy and do all the bits too to make their own.

I doubt its worth throwing nice parts at it mate, you just won't see a return for them. in the advert explain how you've sorted all the known issue's like the r/r, I disagree with carl on the value of the bike, but I also agree with what he says about asking for more, maybe stick it up for £1400 and take an offer. prices for storms are just mad, I know someone who a month or so ago bought a 53plate late model, with under 12k on the clock, 12mths tax and 6mths mot, once he sold some of the extra's the bike cost him £1450.... :biggrin
as I said prices are bonkers.
good luck with the sale mate...

A bit of wet n dry over the header pipe would go a long way. I don't think putting race cans on would add to value really. 1200 should be an easy sell for a clean looking Storm with MOT. I400 is a fair price. The polished frame appeals to a lot of people, the fork lowers look clean and not pitted, fresh coat of paint goes a hell of a long way. Stopper mod the CCT's if not done. Once you have the decals on and it looks original your laughing. Are the decals Red to match the seat. Wish by bodywork looked that good.

Yes.. red decal to go on tank. Stopper mod was something I had in mind to do more for my piece of mind.. When i bought my bike it sounded fine and within weeks it started rattling... that's when i found you guys while looking for advice... Luckily for me my cct's didn't actually go and I swapped them out before the dreaded could happen. I certainly wouldn't want some poor sole to have the bike and for it to go pear shaped for them soon after.

These photos of the bike were taken just after I finished putting her together and at this point most I had done is blow the dust off. Have since made a start at cleaning alloy parts up but will give it a couple hours of my time to go over properly and polish it all up along with the headers.

1200 ono fair condition, fair price, it is what it is, at that fig you dont have to justify any dodgy areas like runs or non standard pegs,

Thanks all for replies.... between comments on here and after looking around the local market where I find there isn't a great deal of choice when it comes to second bikes from £1000 - £1500 I still feel i'd like to go for £1200 but ofc will stick it up for more.. Think i'll try my luck with free ads locally for £1400 obviously being prepared to be beaten down. Almost done now... Tidied up the dodgy wiring and fitted r/r earlier.. ran it up to temp then took it out for a run, to be fair rides nice plus cleaned some of the alloy work on it today too... really starting to look tidy... nice enough to the point I wonder if i'm doing the right thing by selling it, maybe I should sell my own. Ofc I won't do that... kinda got a soft spot for my old boot. MOT next week and then fingers crossed.

Hiya mate... yea did see it... didn't jump on it because I want to get bike MOT'd and last check over before trying to sell it. Did ride it a bit yesterday but only around the back streets.. goes well, sounds sweet.. even the standard brakes put my braided lines and armstrong discs on my own bike to shame. Just a few bits to do this week and once Mot'd i'll take it out for a tidy run.. need to satisfy myself that shes all ok before letting her go.

Fully understand your reasoning and you're to be commended for wanting to be 100% sure the bikes a good'un but wouldn't hurt to let Nige know it's going to be available.
