Hi all

Post by Phil_H »

I have just signed up here, so thought I better pop in and say hi :)

Here by default really so don't slate me....
I'm the new to me owner of a 2000 model Varadero, carb'd version and feel the motor is not quite as sweet as it should be - searching for cct info led me here, where you guys seem to have much more info & solutions (and problems??) on the subject than in Varadero land!

The motor is mostly the same, later Vara's are Fi, and earlier ones had only a 5 spd box, I believe, but everything's swappable, inc pistons and cams, so you can really get a performance upgrade with fitting Storm bits.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Cams would be an easy swap too.

Some links regarding the Cam Chain Tensioners (CCT's)

You can either go for the stop mod http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=19416
Which is the Honda auto CCT's that are converted to a fail safe. So when it does fail, it don't send the valves crashing.

Or

You go for the full manual conversion, your options are here
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 16&t=22720

Then with regards to fitting View Topic

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the welcome all, much appreciated :)

I think I'm currently all cct'd out.

What with stopper mods, replacement springs (are replacements still available??), Manual cct's and the bolt in the rear which I don't quite fuly understand for some reason - it's all a bit bewildering!

I like the idea of keeping the stock honda adjusters but with somekind of homemade failsafe fitted (plus I'm a skinflint lol)

Try reading that again. You don't replace the springs.
I like the idea of keeping the stock honda adjusters but with somekind of homemade failsafe fitted (plus I'm a skinflint lol)
Stop mod is perfect fpr you then, that's what you want.

I think you've misinterpreted my post, maybe I never wrote it clearly.
I understand the spring remains with the stopper mod, I had read somewhere of people renewing the springs as routine maintenance rather than removing it when doing the stopper mod.

It's all a lot to take in but there is lots of info here :)

Can someone explain the mod with longer bolt in the rear of the cct?

The mod with the bolt out the rear of the cct is a mcct mod
On the stopper mod you will not see any difference in appearance
Look up the workshop section for the stopper mod
told you not to but oh no you knew better

Welcome aboard Phil

You have been a busy boy reading up on the CCT options, I'm impressed

First of all, yes you're right there was a member on here who could supply replacement CCT springs. The problem seemed to be that buyers found it difficult to work out how much pre-tension was needed when installing new springs into an old CCT. So replacement springs didn't really take off.

Putting a longer 6mm bolt in the rear of the CCT (I'm assuming you came across that in your reading-up on here), I can explain how that works (but I don't have the time right now), but basically you are turning the standard CCT into a manual cam chain tensioner. Let me know if you would like more on that, unless someone else explains it of course :)

Chris.
