Oh the joys of the VTR

Post by PARSLEYRIPPER »

Hi folks, not posted for a while since the front cct failed on the VTR causing the usual  anyway hey ho, it was the excuse I was looking for to completely strip and re build the whole thing. I ripped the whole bike to bits and sent frame, sub frame, wheels, swing arm and a box of bits to ESP powder coating in Glasgow and wow what a fantastic job they did. I bought another engine as well so I have a spare. Putting the swing arm needle roller in was an absolute ball ache and split the bearing case slightly on the way back in   really annoying, and now I have searched EVERYWHERE and cant find the rubber chain guide for the swing arm, I mean wtf..... what a thing to loose??? there are NONE on Ebay, looks like I will have to buy a whole swing arm for a rubber guide aarrggg. Anyway money is fast being used up on a bike I said I would just run to work and back on.....and not meddle :whatever :whatever a brand new set of Supercorsa V2's and loads of other bits and I am £100 lighter (in case wife reads this) anyway, just thought I would drop in and give an update, I will try and upload some pics as I go.
Oh and why did Honda fit a needle roller bearing that seems too narrow on one side of the swing are and tow normal bearings on the other side with a spacer in between?? seems a bit crazy to me.

This site has been great so far and some of the tech features have been very helpful

Roller type bearings carry the load better than ordinary ball bearing type bearings would be my guess. My old Triumph 650 Thunderbird had a big roller bearing for a main bearing (crankshaft) on the drive side, but only a ball bearing type bearing on the other side. Plus cost must come into the equation. Roller bearings cost more.

Welcome back  I would be good to see all your hard work with some photo's :)

Will do mate, thanks for the replys guys. I put the swing arm back together but did not strip it hmmm I found a pic on the net and it just looked like there was a single needle roller on the chain side. It is only half the width of the hole/swing arm lug it goes into, it just seemed a bit gash 8O not only that it is now, well....a bit split  but it should be ok as it does not have any play in the spacer bush thing I think is called a slave????could be talking complete rubbish here   anyway its on the tight side rather than loose/play so should "bed in" 8O 8O
