cough and splutter

Post by 10robbo »

hello all,i was caught in hell of a storm last week and since then bike has developed a splutter.
considering the age of bike thought I would replace the caps and ht leads.
is it possible to remove the leads form the coils or are they fixed
thanks

have you cleaned out the tiny drain holes under for the sparkplugs, if not clear they fill up with water during heavy rain and cause the bike to misfire

It sound like a complete rite off and unsalvageable, if you put it out there someone may give you a good price for her, as long as I get first dibs...;)

plug caps can be unscrewed off the HT lead, I cant remember if the HT lead can be taken out of the coil or if it is epoxied in.

like Marty said, the 1st thing should be to look at the drain for the front sparkplug recess, as if it is blocked it will fill with water and lead to shorting. if you want to change the plug caps and HTs, then you are better off fitting plugtop coils from a newer Honda. there is a thread in the workshop knowledge base on how to do this

Also check the front spark plug and renew the pair if required - as front one can corrode due to water getting in as already mentioned. Get the spark plug recess in the cam cover nice and dry, drain hole cleared and use silicone grease around the rubber cap insert to help repel water.

thanks for your replies,
was not aware of the drain hole,so I will sort that first, then if the leads will come out of the coils I will replace them.
I will as you mention go for stick coils if I can find some sensibly priced

Hi robbo, stick coils are a mod I've been looking at for a while, if you can only find a set I'd be willing to go halfsies?

The perfect hole-cleaning tool is the little red tube on a can of WD40, by the way.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
