Which is the Best Affordable VFR Honda (750-800)

Post by thunderbolt »

A friend has offered me a 1998 (I think) Honda VFR 800 (Yellow). I don't know much about them. I don't know how much he wants for it at this stage either. I don't know whether to get it or whether it is not a sought after model.

This is it, sorry the pic is not that good.

Which were the best VFRs that Honda made? I believe that some of them were heavier with the resulting drawbacks.

Thanks.
Cheers
Don

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Nonsense!
I spent the evening out on one on Friday. The V-tec is really good and when it kicks in, it takes off like a scolded cat.
All the VFRs are good. They do everything well...they just aren't inspiring. They are 160mph sports cruisers. I remember saying to my Bro, his is the bike I would want to drive to Scotland but mine is the bike I would want to ride when I get there :)

My bro owns a V-tec VFR.. weighs more than a fully loaded Challenger 2...

Plus valve timings on them will set you back £600 (the quote my brother got from Honda. No one else would touch it)

 also they feel horrible to ride. I don't know what it is exactly, but every time I'm on it it just feels... wrong. It's an odd feeling and i dislike it :P

My best mate has a pre vtec, sounds nice enough, goes well enough but I find it a bit clumsy :? Never owned one though so can't comment much more than that.

IIRC I thought the people in the know recommended the pre vtec model, simply because the service costs are a lot more for the vtec, as YMVirt says,

There's also a lot of dislike to the earlier VTEC's as the rev point at where the VTEC kicks in was too soon. They moved it up a couple of hundred revs in later revised models. If you going to learn to do your own valve adjustment then the VTEC is a good option, but the earlier models are the favourite for a lot of folk.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm a bit more clued up on them now.

Keep any further comments coming.

I don't really need another bike and it seems the VTR does everything better than the VFR looking at the stats. VTR weighs less, has more hp, more torque, is less boring (not at all linear), goes round corners better, etc.

Can't argue with that  Spot on it my opinion. But it is a better touring option and there is far more better quality racks, rails and luggage for it. If touring is not your bag then that's not an issue.
As far as the big service is concerned i'ts every 16,ooo miles and Big bro put his bike in for it and not a single shim needed doing so the guy only charged him for the time spent (Decent garage, none Honda) and it was about half of what folk have said.
Different courses for different Horses and all that. Two good bikes you just need to think about what you would like the most :)
