Front brakes info required...

Post by Jamoi »

Evening gents

Has anyone rebuilt their front brake master cylinder? I have an SP1 master cylinder which looks fine, but the piston, when pushed in with my finger isn't quite as silky smooth as the Storm one. Perhaps it's worth getting a rebuild kit?

I also have some SP1 calipers, as I don't know the history of them, would it be worth renewing all the seals?

I know saving money on brakes is a bad idea, buuuut would you say aftermarket parts are ok?

This is the M&P master cylinder kit I'm considering:

This is the caliper seal kit I'm considering: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 44&alt=web

The caliper seal kit is advertised as SP1 & SP2 compatible, didn't Honda change the piston sizes on the SP2? or was that just the master cylinder piston size from 19 to 17mm

Your thoughts would, as always, be very much appreciated! :)

if the master doesn't feel right get a service kit for it, that is a no brainer.

but before you buy the seal kit for the callipers it might be worth stripping the old ones out, cleaning and rebuilding with red rubber grease..... its generally dirt or corrosion under the static part of the seal that makes them tight, the seal is fine.

tip is to use wooden tooth pick to pull seals out, don't use metal screwdriver as you rick damage to both rubber and aluminium parts

Doing mine at the minute Jamie. Front & rear calipers are off being anodised and I have bought seals from a company up in Sheffield. They sell on E Bay but are cheaper if you go direct. I have their details somewhere if you need it. I am going to renew the seals in the MC as well.

Thank you very much chaps

I believe the caliper seal kit in my link is "Power house" which is reassuring after your recommendations

I'll get some red rubber grease and get cleaning first then.

Can't wait to feel the extra power from these bad boys!

Thanks Mik, I was sure I had read a difference in piston size between the two bikes, I'm not going mad!

So I wonder how they can sell a caliper seal kit which covers both models, I guess they can't

Ah well, I'll just dismantle and clean everything for now.

Make sure you soak the new seals before putting them in, Clean the pistons before pushing them back and Brasso is very good to polish the pistons up. Remove old seals with something soft not a small screwdriver if you use the old ones. I wouldn't though. make sure you use the correct Dot brake fluid too.
