What speed does countersteering kick in?

Post by Pem Brooke »

I know that we subconsciously counter steer our bikes...but only after a certain speed. Often wondered how we kind of just know...practice or just natural? It's a long long time since I first jumped on a motorbike but can remember wobbling around like a drunk until I got the hang of it.

Does the coutersteering kick in around same speed for all bikes, or does it depend on steering geometry etc? :confused
Twist it 'til it breaks, then back off half a turn.... :eh:

I'd say anything from 2mph unless your name is Virt and try to steer around a bend !!

You can use it on all bikes. The difference i,s how much you use depends on the geometry and the speed.
If you use as much force at 10 mph as you do at 70 say, you'd throw yourself on the floor. I'ts also dependant on the situation. Do you really need to counter steer at 10mph ( or slow moving traffic) or, if you are on a big lazy bend at 70mph, can't you just lean into the bend and not use any?
I've alwayed used a bit of counter steer to either get the bike over quicker or hold a line I want. Sometimes I use a bit of over steer to keep it more upright. I think it's up to you, your style, and the situation as to how or even if you use it.

 that's one crazy push bike

We used to sit on our handle bars facing the seat and then peddle up the road. That took a bit of concentration...never had the bottle to try it on a motorbike though 8O

If it has two wheels, round tires and a left right directional front wheel....we press to initiate lean (counter steer) at anything above walking speed.

That's a pretty darn cool image you've described there Pete, but good luck without the poxy coat... it was -10 degrees there! lol

Between 10 & 15 mph and it kicks in automatically without you realising it

you were being kind to me then Lloydie ta. I agree any speed fast enough not to turn the bars
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!
