Valve clearances
Valve clearances
Looking to spend some money on my bike it's covered 15000miles and valve clearances are one thing on the to do list is it worth getting them checked? Also what other mechanical jobs should I consider getting done
Re: Valve clearances
Valve clearances are a good thing to do. Get the as close to the middle setting as you can. Also remove the swing arm and grease all the linkages and bearings. Check and replace wheel bearings too. Head stock bearings while your at it.
He'll why not completely strip it and give it a good clean.
What shock do you have fitted and when was the last time the forks had a service?
All depends how much money you have to throw at it and what life the bike has had.

Re: Valve clearances
All bearings will be getting done and swing arm greased. Was told by previous owner he had the bike all checked over before he went to the iom tt races. I've had it since April covered just over 1000 miles serviced it twice had carbs balanced then had problem so drained the carb float bowls and bike was running ok again so guess may need to have carbs rebalanced looking to spend around £600 thanks for reply
Re: Valve clearances
Service the swingarm and shock linkage bearings, this is something that should be done on a regular basis, but is often over looked.
You don't want to end up like this (take a look at link) http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=11809

Re: Valve clearances
That will be getting checked 100% frightening looking at what you could be riding un aware
Re: Valve clearances
I did check mine at 15,000 miles only because I had the bike partially stripped at the time, they were just in limit then. When I checked them again at Honda's recommended 16,000 miles I had one tight one. Not sure if the extra 1,000 miles made a difference, or if the engine was not precisely in the same position as it was when first checked,
