YouTube says HTML5 video ready for primetime, makes it default

Everyone hates Flash, right? You have to install a plug-in, it's resource intensive, it doesn't work on mobile, and it causes all sorts of security problems. YouTube has been working on ridding itself of Adobe's ancient Web plug-in for several years now, and while the whole site has been slowly transitioning away from Flash, today YouTube announced that it finally serves HTML5 video by default.

Do yourselves a favour and ditch google as your search engine. Please install and use the following as you start page.

It's a start to protecting yourselves nd given you some online privacy even if it's to stop the advertisers. Note in the settings it also has some nice parental features that could be of use if you install on your kids machine.

That's an interesting one Chris but it's a compete browser whereas Startpage is a search engine that can be added to any browser so everything goes through a secure shell. I have tried Disconnect in the past which is based on the DuckDuck go search engine. It's a bit slow and cumbersome and I didn't get on with it so it got trashed. They mention AdBlock Plus as having advertising which is true, but if one uses AdBlock Edge which is Based on AdBlockPlus there is no advertising, and Ghostery is fantastic. I highly recommend that one. They also say that there is advertising with Firefox. That is not true, they are misleading people there. Firfeox, part of the Mozilla group is open source and the only advertising one gets in Firefox is through Google etc.

I'm currently running Adblock Edge, Ghostery, AVG PrivacyFix (similar to Disconnect but without the search features), Better Privacy, Facebook Disconnect and FlashBlock. I also run SkipScreen which blocks a lot of nuisance popups one can get when surfing the likes of Porn sites. Not that I go searching specifically for porn And of course I am now using this new Start Page search engine. A lot of these extensions cross paths like most things and can cause conflicts, so one has to be a bit careful to how they use them, so going through the set up's, preferences is important to enable and disable what one wants. Also make use of any White lists where needs be. Sites like the catch up TV services wont allow you to play anything if blocking Flash. I think that's everything but I have bound to have missed something.

I prefer to have complete control rather than have a browser come pre-installed with stuff I may or may not necessarily need or like.

Recently I have been looking into and researching an alternative more secure DNS service. Alternative address books on the web that is. Everytime you request a search or site it has to look up the address first. I would rather not use my ISP's DNS servers.

Going slightly off topic here but this is a handy add on. Lazarus......how many times have you spent 30mins writing a long post on forums, clicked the submit button and it looses the connection, times out or whatever and you loose what you have wrote. More commonly known as a DOH moment Well Lazarus: Form Recovery takes care of that for you so you don't loose you content. Here's the link

And to finish this post off. Lets all kill one of the most privacy invasive sites on the net.

Better yet you can use Tor

Tor is only a proxy service, it's not enough. Anyway Tor has been compromised and it's as slow as shite. Tor was originally designed by and for the CSA whoever they are called, I can't remember, the MI6 US equivalent. So they understand how the network works and now the NSA are monitoring it.

Yes you are correct, the link I posted is for a browser and not a search engine.

I tried DuckDuckGo search engine a while back, but thought it seemed limited compared to Google. I'm going to give Startpage a try seeing as you've suggested it,

Ha ha, Well seeing as the Aviator browser is doing it's best to block the likes of Google I can't see them being most reliable source of info. Actually the fact that Google have even bothered to look into and publish their so called findings tells me that there is something to be had about Aviator. Google are well known for taking a dislike to their competitors and want world domination. Notice they have nothing positive to say about Aviator. Any good report would list the pro and cons. I would rather hear what the worlds independent security experts have to say.

As for vulnerabilities, every browser has it's vulnerabilities especially via the less obvious remote connections and the use of javascripts etc. Nothing is ever 100% secure and all one can do is secure things as best they can. It's then the Whitehat Hackers job to find those vulnerabilities and publish them so things can be updated. For example, I have recently disabled the “media.peerconnection.enabled” setting to false in my Firfox aboutconfig because of a vulnerability with VPN showing a users real IP address. This is even more so important with a Windows based machine. They are always going to be less secure than Mac by default.

The vulnerability affects WebRTC-supporting browsers including Firefox and Chrome and appears to be limited to Windows machines.

I'm thinking of locking down my email soon with higher security. The same company in Denmark that offers the StartPage and ixquick search (if one would rather not go via Googles engines) also offer a Mail service. This is not free though.

It certainly looks like Google are not impressed with Aviator, but then if it's adverts that pay for their services can you really blame them. I'll be surprised though if enough start using the Aviator browser to make that big of a difference to Google.
