There's various reasons for it. There's what I call commercial spam but this is not true spam, just harassment. Only commercial businesses trying to promote products. the likes of bike part shops etc. Some of them will get your email when you purchase something which is cheeky because it should be an opt in with a check box. it's not for us to opt out. In fact in the UK businesses have to now by law make it an opt in rather than opt out and include a link to be taken off their mailing list within their emails. Note some of them make this difficult.
It's a bit like UK sites now have to declare a (
cookie disclosure) under the EU directive. Some of these companies are sneaky like motorcycle city or whatever they are called these days. You have to give them your details when you purchase something to get your receipt. The ones that make it difficult to opt out or I haven't knowingly opted in for I will mark as abuse spam that gets sent to
blackhole.mx and they get investigated and possibly penalised. This is not your normal everyday spam filter, this get's looked into by the network mailserver spam police I suppose they could be called. This can be serious and have serious consequences for bushinesses. They may get blacklisted and end up having to try and get themselves taken off the list.
http://www.spamhaus.org/ A bit like how credit services work.
Now the true spammers trying to flog viagra etc, I'm not sure why they do it. It's obviously to sell a product and some people, believe it or not, must fall for it and buy from them otherwise what's the point. Sometimes there are alternative more nefarious intentions behind what they are doing, viruses, malware, scams etc. Some may even be looking for a weakness/back door into your machine and hijack it (without you knowing) for even more nefarious intentions like the use of your machine to remotely connect to a website. Get hold of a few thousand machines and get them all to connect to a site at the same time and the traffic overload is going to cause that site problems and possibly bring it down/crash it. You may remember Paddy bookmakers being held to ransom a few years back when they site was hit just before a big race. Then there's email harvesting which is like an offspring of spamming. Collecting emails to sell on on to either comercial businesses and/or other spammers. This is like a virus in itself the way it spreads. And that's just the few reasons I know about.
Going off topic slightly but don't forget machines can be taken over remotely these days by terrorist organizations too. Why use their own machines to communicate across networks. They even use the likes of eBay. yes eBAy believe or not. Ebay is used like the old fashioned spy film hole in the wall. A hidden message behind a brick/a dropbox. The use of Steganography is involved. See the following link. Has anyone worked out
my message yet ![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
Encryption is good but that is visible so one knows where to look. When encryption is hidden one don't know where to start looking
![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)
What they will do is list an item. Everyone in the network organization will know the time and day it's being listed and where to look, grab the pic with the hidden message, file, movie or whatever inside it. The pic can then very quickly be replaced with a straight pic with no hidden content and no one will be none of the wiser. The only give away in these pics is filesize but you need to know where to look and then still break the encryption. Some of these bikes we see as being scammers could very well be this kind of thing going on.
The dark web.
