3rd Replacement CCT!

Post by Martin »

:( At 7k miles it went and took two valves with it. At 11k miles I heard the warning sounds of clattering in the front cylinder and changed it in time. Now at 16k miles its' clattering like F all over again. Has anyone else been this unlucky????? At least its' still under the Honda Care warranty 'til March. Now, where did I leave that razor blade.....

You seem to have record-beating history of CCT failures :( Mine 1997 was bought with 28000 km on the clock and had no rattle or any signs of CCT failure ( I know engine has never been touched and CCTs was original 97 part), but I decided to change it at 30 000 km just in case (then I ended with loads of experiments with Kawasaki CCTs anyway :)).
I spoke to all of my colleagues/friends with Storms - none of them had issue so far, thou they all at least taking CCTs out to clean and oil them at least once a 30 000 km.
What year is your bike? And - are you sure there is nothing specific to that particular bike or dealer- like carbs sync, work done on engine, quality of oil, break-in period - anything?
I am no expert in CCT breaking history, loads of people here way more experienced, but - all I can think of:
1. Make sure of is that oil channel on (respectively)right/left side is OK in engine body and in CCT itself, so that oil reaching insides of CCT?
2. After first time bike came to dealer - did they checked chain guides for damage?
3. And - when I tried to dig out "scientific" reasons for camchain loading it's "unloaded" side it seemed quite clear, that one and only reason for that could be very sudden "closing" and then big "opening" of throttle, causing big pulses to drivetrain and lot of very hard engine braking - dunno if this information as any use...
just some ideas...

Cheers for that. The bike is a 2000 model, and the work has been done by two different dealerships. I've never questioned them about what exactly they do...but I will this time so thanks for the info

recently heard a bit of a rattle, not much but definitly the start of CCT so changed them...........milage just under 18,000 miles.
so if next ones last 18,000 its not too bad, more of a service issue.

Guess the real problem is when they go at speed..............scares me enough to consider buying a different bike.

it may be clever, but its not big.
