Starting a vtr, or is it just me

Post by Dan »

I don't no if it's just me been a dingbat, but what is the procedure of starting a vtr,

Mine seems to be a little vague to start.

depends on a few factors dan.
is the battery a good'un
is your reg/rec working properly
is your starter motor worn, or is the connection to the main power cable rusty.
all of these will effect how the bike turns over.
i'm sure someone will come along with a more in depth answer.
as lloydie says, mine differs, it likes a little choke and no throttle.

Your a little vague as to the starting issue. Does it require choke and how much or not. With throttle or no throttle etc. Is it slow turning over. As has been mentioned they are all slightly different and there are too many variables to list that come into play with regards to starting and running.

At the moment mine requires no choke and only a small amount of throttle then a little choke for a minute. Come the colder weather it will require more choke and possibly before hitting the start button.

I do full choke for about 1 or 2 minutes ,no throttle when the choke is out, when im ready to go then I push it fully in and ride off . after about 500 yards it will then idle at tickover .

as carl says , whats the problem ? if you try and start it and it ends up running that's ok ? so long as your not having to flatten the battery every time ?

good luck with it anyway

3/4 choke and no throttle when cold, 50 degs then push the choke in. Once its warmed up, no choke enough throttle to give me the sound!. Yahoo

Same here but half choke when cold and quarter-to-none when warm.. Then full choke once it catches...

50 degrees is generally the 'wombles go for it mate', temperature

funny, I've always been full choke, no throttle, but am about to start playing around to try and stop backfires. I try not to annoy the neighbours by riding off fairly soon after startup, but if it's going off like a gunshot every time it doesn't really help!

Sometimes it starts up on the second turn to a lovely purr, sometimes it needs a few more turns and then kaboom. Hoping with less/no choke I'll have some more consistent results.

Pull choke out a smidge, so the choke shaft just shows, turn over till she starts, if she doesn't first time then choke in twist throttle a couple of times, then firs up again. Leave to idle to allow revs to pick up, then use the trottle as normal.
