cornering/tyres/stability

Post by VTRDaz »

Just had my first proper ride out since I got my storm and got a couple of q's that I probably know the answer to, but I'll ask anyway!!
They're quite ballsey aren't they, been used a BT1200s, then a 600 Fazer, grunt reminds of my TL1000 I had afew yrs ago, but easier to use???

Right onto the q'

It has mismatched tyres (not good I know 8O ) a pirelli super corsa up front and a quite worn bridgestone bt something or other on the back. Are Storms sensitive to tyres?, as when riding slow at juctions etc the bike feels like it wants to turn too quickly round the corner, I have to fight the bars to stop it turning too sharp. Had a look at front tyre and it's a lot more worn on rhs than left (ex-track tyre) and this is the direction it tips in worse. Seems ok when going a bit faster but obviously not going too mad due to the tyres  Checked alignments etc and all straight. I was going to get off ebay a matching super corsa for the rear, but now I don't know whether to just buy a new pair of something like bt23's or the like...... :confused

Sensitive to tyre pressure. Check that first. The workshop manual says 42psi in the rear and 36 psi in the front when cold. Front pressure is especially sensitive and noticeable on the steering. Sounds like you too low.

That would be my advice, get two new matching tyres and go from there. At the moment you'll have a hard job to tell if what you're experiencing is the tyres or not,

cheers  , The pressures are all ok, just bought the bike, so been reet through it, oil, tyres brakes etc etc, so know the pressures are ok! Looking at front tyre its had a hard life on the rhs round the track and back is badly squared with 2" chicken strips, so think I'm going to swap both front and back for some new ones. Straightline, fast stability was good, quick cornering ok. M+P are flogging off tyres as a pair deal at what seems a reasonable price so it seems time for credit card to take a hit.......... :eek2

Then on Ebay I find these, look to be suited to my riding style, I want good mileage and stability as the VTR's just my 'toy' and occasionally I take my son on't back. Had a read of the reviews on 'the google' seem a pretty good all rounder with few vices and at that price CHEAP!!! Think I can afford a  later!!

Seen them m8 , I have Pirelli Diablo Rosso's on my Storm , they are different in
tread pattern then those shewn but they are really good and hold the road superbly I can take
cornering without hesitation and bags of confidence I cant fault em.

Sorry for the late reply I'm away from home. TBH I wouldn't like to comment on what's a good and bad tyre. I have a new Dunlop Smortsmart 2 on the front with a mismatch on the back which is shortly due to get changed to match the front.

Get a matched pair of fresh tyres on the bike before considering changing any settings. Fighting the bike with a slight lean on is usually a sign of tyre wear. I usually change my tyres when I start to feel that regardless how how much tread the tyre appears to have.

It's the only part of your bike in contact with the road so you don't want to have any doubt in your mind about their condition.

 I had a proper look at the tyres already on it at weekend and found that the rhs of the front tyre looked to have a hell of a lot more angle than the left, then looked real closely and to my astonishment I realised it wasn't sat on the rim correctly, it hadn't 'popped' on the rim all the way round on the rhs. 8O and no sign of any airleaks either??? god knows how long it's been like that? :eek2
So after letting it down adding some tyre soap and reinflating it popped on properly - test rode and it 100% better.........

Should get my new 'boots' for it by weekend so going to swap them anyway, but at least I'm confident that it should be fine withe new tyres

and relax
