Bike scratched during service

Post by jpickup »

Took the bike for a service at Tippetts (in Surbiton) last week. Noticed a week later after giving it a good wash that they'd scratched the bubble screen quite deeply and also the tank. I think the tank scratches will polish out but the screen will need replacing.

Phoned them up and was told I'll have to bring it in for them to have a look. I'll be visiting them tomorrow.

Obviously neither of us have any proof as to the state of the bike prior to the service so I'm expecting a fight (apart from these scratches, the bike is immaculate).

Any suggestions?

BTW, I had been using Hartgate exclusively prior to this service but after the bad rap they'd been getting recently (on this board) I thought I'd try Tippetts. They are much closer to my house anyway so it seemed worth giving them a try. Of course the downside is that I don't have a 'loyal customer' history at Tippetts like I do at Hartgate so they are less likely to believe me than Hartgate would be.

Oh man, what a shame. :(
I don't envy you your task. What I would like to know is how the hell can you keep your bike clean enough this time of year to notice 8O The roads are so bad around here that if it had happened to me I wouldn't have found out untill spring.

Took the bike in last Saturday but the manager wasn't in so they took some photos and said they'd get back to me.

Well, I've just had the call and "I waited too long before informing them so there is nothing they can do."

The best offer was selling me a new screen at cost (25% off retail). I've turned that down as I'd rather spend the full money at another shop than give them any more cash.

I'll be off back to Hartgate in future. If the same thing had happened there then I suspect I would have got a better result, simply because I have a history so they "know" me (bought two new bikes and had all previous servicing done there).

So, I'm pissed off but can't do anything about it. I'll have to go to Ally Pally this weekend to cheer myself up!

Any recommendations of great products for sorting out scratches in paintwork? The scratches on the tank look very light so should polish out.

Pete: The bike is clean as I don't use it during the winter, actualy I stopped using bikes to go to work a few years back after one too many accidents so now just take it out on sunny days. I do have to get it MOTed in Jan (and serviced at the same time) as that was the month I originially bought it.
