Manual CCTs is there another way of fitting them?

Hi guys

I purchased some manual ccts from Ade, along with the instructions, a little daunting lol.

Anyway I have called a number of motorrbie garages and all of them have said they would just be getting tdc and setting the manual tensioner to the same length as the auto one, they would not be removing cam covers etc!

Is this right? Surely all the garages can't be wrong or do they just have more experience.

You pay your money you take your chance.. I remove the cam covers, that way i can be sure it's correct and i can measure the chain slack, I can also see if anyones been at it before and got the timing a tooth out. It takes about 3 hours to do the complete job, ride in ride out..

No this is not right. With an IL4 yes it would be fine but not a V2. It has to be At TDC on the compression stroke for total slack in the chain. If you happen to fall at TDC on the exhaust stroke then there is a good chance of the chain slipping as it will still be under some tension, on a V2 whereas on a IL4 there are more cylinders and valves to keep things in place and stop the cylinder moving.

So yes I would say that all garages can get it wrong if they are not used to working on a V twin. Even Honda stealers themselves have been known to have got it wrong in the past. So basically it's like Popkat says "You pay your money you take your chance"

Cam covers off is the way to go for fitting manual CCT's, and as Carl pointed out, each cylinder you are working on must be on the compression stroke at TDC. Also as Popkat mentions, it gives you the chance to check the valve timing while you're there with the cam covers off,

Thanks for the replies guys, it makes sense about the il4 remark, as 1 garage said they have done em on a cbr600.

Thanks for the offer mate but at the mo the bike is not mot'd due to being off the road for 2 yrs, everyone says I should change them before going anywhere!!!
My bike is 41k and they don't look recently changed!

You wont find many people more capable than Popkat. If you want them done properly then you need someone who knows these bikes. Otherwise many folks have been successful following my guide in the links below. It's down to how competent you feel.

Oh...and you don't even need a van, AP and myself have had a VTR in back of a Black cab Only just mind.
