Larger tank..

Post by mrmojo »

Hello...

I have a '00 VTR and I'm interested in replacing its 16 litre tank with the one from the newer model which is 19 litres... Does anyone know if it fits, or do I need to do any modifications? Thanks.

I have fitted the later 19litre tank to my 2000 bike and contrary to what people may say, it fits straight on. all mounting points are identical, filler cap fits straight on, tank sender unit fits straight on. You will have to purchase a new vacuum tap, elbow/union and the short preshaped fuel pipe to connect union to tap. the original fuel pipes and vacuum supply pipe will fit no problem. On full steering lock the clip-on to tank clearance is slightly reduced to approx 3/4" but it's not a problem, just been to Normandy and back this weekend 1200 miles and genuinely saw 150 mile tank range at steady 80/90 mph. only a mouthfull left though! Have photo's of tanks side by side, hope you and anyone else who see's this posting finds it useful, Regards Paul. mardyboys@aol.com

19 l is nice, but...
I saw thread on US Superhawk forum - one of guys there (his nick Superbling, and he always does really interesting work on his Storm) came up with purely genious idea of installing VFR800 VTEC (2002-2005) tank onto Storm. You know, that tank holds genuine 22 liters!
He did it, and thou he have not written details yet and warned people that this might be dangerous if you do not know what you doing - I got in touch with my friends in UK and they been very kind to buy me tank for 40 GBP on eBay and sent it to me to Belgium.
I just got it - in perfect state.
Later in summer I am going to do it. Then my Storm will be great combination of tourer and naughty twin. That guy in US - he's genious. Best approach to that problem I ever saw.
Here is the that thread on SuperHawk forum, with photos:

Thank you for your answers...

dakar_nakar: I would be grateful if you could send me the pictures at mrmojo@bikenet.gr, and any info about the modification you did...

bluesman: Very useful information, but I suppose replacing the tank with the one from VFR is much more difficult... what about the filter box benieth it? I hope everything goes well, and I expect to see some pictures of the completed project...

its done

Post by bluesman »

it is already completed by this guy on US Superhawk forum - he wrote all details yesterday, he actually drive Storm with this tank. Check photos there and separate write-up on how to do it :)
Not really difficult work.
It requires a bit of work, but by any means it is cheaper and better looking than aftermarket 21l tanks...
I will be doing it later in summer - I just signed contract for new house couple of hours ago :) so I guess May, June will be completely gone to decorate and repair house rather than Storm:)
