Newbie saying Hi!

Post by fewtrees »

Hi,

Just thought I'd say Hi! I've just bought a '97 Firestorm for £1900 quid, 12k miles and amazing nick from a family friend.

Got a question though, what tank range are people getting and does the later model tank fit the older bike?

Plus I've heard about the front end being a bit soft from mags. What's the real story as a lot of mags are just one mans opinion?

Cheers

Hello...

Post by t00lkit »

Welcome to our forum, hope u enjoy the 'storm.

Mines an f2 model, and never had any problems with the front suspension, but I'm no Rossi.

Some of the owners have had their forks redone at Rogers of Revolution?

Sounds like he can do the biz if needed.

Why not see what you think first before 'diving' in (get it!)

Best of luck

Yes I have "haveyouseenmyeviltwin" ! Saw the ba****d today when i went to get my ( overdue ! ) tax ! Wouldnt take my insurance schedule instead of my policy ! What a spoilsport !
Kind of my fault seeing as i thought i had picked up my policy. What really bugged me was the fact that i couldnt get parked to get the cash from the machine , then when i did i was behind a bloody geriatric !, then i couldnt get parked near the post office, then stood in a bloody long queue, then nearly passed out when your evil twin smiled at me and informed me that this was in fact my insurance schedule and not my POLICY !!!!
Ever have one of those days ?
Am okay now. Fat un and a Stella !
Be good peeps !

p.s i was driving a bloody big transit van at the time.

Hi Fewtrees,

I start looking for fuel at around 85 miles and start to panic at around 105/110. In all honesty I don't think the extra 3 litres is worth the hassle.
Also I think the larger tank comes at the expense of a smaller air box. Watch out for what this might do to engine performance. I suspect the newer firestorms produce slightly less power - and this could be one of the reasons.
All conjecture and there are people on this site who know much better than me. All I'm saying is research it properly before you decide.
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

I'll give a few weeks before I decide what to do with the forks.. perhaps they'll suit my riding style!

Wow! 100 miles aint too far. Does anyone tour on these? My other bike gets around 250miles out of a tank! I guess touring's not a problem in western europe - plenty of petrol stations..

Hi mate,
Got me a 97 firestorm in febuary £2K with lods of trick bits, road it back from Wales to Surrey, the weather was horrible, snow and rain all the way.
Anyway forgot to turn the choke off  done 94 miles, got stuck between junctions, had 2 miles to the next services and you know what happens next.
Lucky missus was following up in the car.
Don't try and be brave its worth catching it early.

Hi, I'm a new guy too, got a 2000 model 3 weeks ago. Mileage is approx 85 before the light... ouch. I've head that dino-jetting can improve that, so on the wish list.

I've been reading up on the suspension, loads of great posts on here if you do a search. From what i can gather, the money option is to speak to Roger at revolution, the budget option is to set the std as best you can. Depending on how heavy you are, and how hard you ride, this may be enough. Fist thing is to set the sag (difference between height with suspension fully extended, and height with you on it). Best description of how to do this is in this magazine article: http://www.sportrider.com/tech/suspension/

Once you've set the sag (set by adjusting the compression of the springs), you need to adjust the damping. Your manual has the details of how to make the adjustments. the article tells you what to adjust too.

FYI my first attempt at setting up is as follows:

Front: 2.5 rings showing for preload. Damping 1/2 turn out from from hard.

Rear: 3rd notch for pre-load and half a turn out from hard on the damping.

I weigh 75kg. I have to say though my helper for measuring the sag buggered off halfway during the job and I haven't yet tested these settings properly, so by no means use this as a guide!

Good luck.
