As a work around I have found you can delete PM messages if you open the message and delete from there by clicking on the (X) as shown below at the top righthand side of the message window, right next to the avatar in that message. You can click on the screenshot to make it larger to view for those who don't already know.
I'm assuming this must have been what "freeridenick" was doing going by his post above.

Re: the 3.3.1 bit. It means the next version of this forum software will be 3.3.1. then subsequently the problem should be fixed.

Aaaaaah got it now.
I was trying to delete them in wrong section, not while reading the message, got it sorted now, as cheekysue would say, I was man looking.

I've removed the limit from the PM's as storage is less of an issue these days.

Forum software now updated to 3.3.1 and the ability to delete multiple PM's appears to be fixed.
