Fuel warning light - no hang on this is different....

Post by MrMastodon »

So, first time with new bike hitting fuel warning light.

Came on at 110miles. Yay, about right.

But - started sputtering 6miles later - only just made it to petrol station. Bike started and ran normally after refilling.

Any ideas why only 6miles after light I was out?

The float arm may have been bent altering the height at which it triggers the light.

On me commuter hack anything up to 120 before RLOD came on...Never found out how much further it would go as I always went by the trip milage re fill ups...Basicaly 3 commutes I'd need fule...
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

Fill up a 5ltr fuel container and strap it on the back of bike
fill up tank
go for ride, when light comes on, reset trip and ride till it runs out,
make a note of the mileage after light as a safety margin
put 5ltr in and crawl to nearest garage !
then when light comes on in future, you will know within reason how many miles you have left.

Thing is that I was actually rubbing it after 6 miles though! Or a coincidental problem but then it ran perfectly after filling up.

So if it’s a float in there it might just be that it’s been sitting for a while and got a bit sticky.

The fuel can on the back is a good idea to see for certain though - rather than filling up at 70 miles forever more to avoid it!

If the bike had previously never triggered the low fuel light the float mechanism might have been a little sticky.
As suggested, carry some spare and run it out, just make sure you're not pulling out into a busy road with a small gap when it dries up...
Edit: just seen that you came to the same conclusion while I was posting!
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
