Frustrating afternoon on the RD, a few jobs need more parts, a few went ok.
Failed to bled the front brake as the bleed nipple is fecked.
So I moved to the clutch and there is no bleed nipple on that so
I had to Bleed it via the hose joints. I got the clutch bled eventually and then to test it I tried to put it into gear…. It doesn’t
Took the air shifter off and it is not that.
There is a reasonable movement on the shifter but there is no click of the selector drum Rotating into the indent.
I have the clutch cover off and I assume I need to get the clutch basket off to see what is going on.

No harm in checking what's going on behind the clutch basket I agree. If you're intending to be splitting the cases then you can check the gearbox components then. If you're not intending to be splitting them get the engine running and see how the gear selecting is then, that would be my suggestion

I had to get a new 30mm socket to get the clutch off, but after that it came off easy enough. I will need to work out where to source a new tab washer before I rebuild.
but first thing I can see is the little roller is missing that should sit over the pin on the selected actuating arm.
but unfortunately even if I put a bar in the gap, the selector drum is not rotating when the arm moves up or down. the hooks that should catch onto the selector drum are not grabbing onto the ridges in the drum.

took more bits off and with the return spring off I could start to get it to select, but it needed the full travel of the selector arm, so the missing top hat roller is the problem, it is causing too much lost motion so the gear lever travel is not creating the maximum travel of the selector arm.
just need to track down the source of this part for a 35yr old bike.

Not that it matters now I guess as you have worked out what is wrong with the gear selecting
