200/55/17 and 130/70/17 tyres for VTR 1000 SP1 2001 RC51

Post by pslavkin »

Hi everyone, have you tried mounting a 200/55/17 rear tyre and 130/70/17 front tyres on a VTR 1000 sp1 rc51 2001? Actually mine has 190/55/17 and 120/70/17 but seems that the next size will fit on both tyres.
The only concern I have is that the chain will be too close to the rubber on rear tyre and don't know how much chain bends when the motorcycle is tilted or 'cause normal vibration..
I've fear that chain touch the tyre rubber and damage it.

Next links are the tyres I'm talking about:

What do you think?
Thanks for any suggestions!

I wouldn't increase the front tyre. These are already long and slow to turn (but stable) and you'll lose more steering agility. The rear is possible but all manufacturers have different tyre widths for a nominal 200 size tyre. You'll have to try it to find out, unless you measure the current clearance, fit the new tyre to your loose wheel and calculate whether you have enough clearance before fitting it.

But the main issue is getting chain lube on the tyre shoulder. If you're leant over that far it'll end badly.

Is this for visual looks or are you already getting to the edge of the tyre routinely?

Tks Tony, understand.. seems like a try an error.
It's mainly 'cause I'm planning to drive on roads that are not in perfect shape, so I prefer loose some steering controls but don't break the tyre or fall out. As much width as I can have the better for those roads.
The chain lube is a concern like you mention. I'll take in consideration too.
Tks for sharing, I'll post my final decisions after all.

Just buy stickier standard sized tyres.

Aja, I'll dig on that but there is no so much options at my country (at least for my budget...)
By the way, have you an opinion on Kingtyre K97 Chinese brand and model like the bottom pics?

No, when I had my SP2 I used Dunlop, Metzler and other brands well known in the UK.
We have the benefit of magazines publishing comparative tests to use as a guide.
