VTR smoking when startup

Hi everyone. Im new to this site so pleas pardon me if this has been discussed before. I just bought my vtr and the guy who owned it told me that he serviced it with 20w50 oil and now the bike smokes upon startup. I know the bike ran great before the service. Would it be advisable to change the oil to 10w40 now, can the current oil do harm? Or should I change it to 10w40? Dont know much about these bikes. Please help.

Welcome aboard
First off the 10W40 should be a Semi-synthetic oil, which the 20W50 oil probably isn't. If it was me I'd change it back to the correct oil, even if the 20W50 oil turns out to be semi-synth. Then take it from there if the bike is still smoking,

20w50 ??? Do any bikes use 20w50? Hope it is not car oil

I replaced the oil with Castrol 10w40 today. Still smoking when starting the bike and reving it. Hoping it’s not valve seals. Need to drive it tomorrow morning to get to work, hoping for the best.

Only really high mileage engines normally going on.
How many miles has yours covered?

Hi there guys, sorry for the late response, my bike has 40000 km on the clock. Im leaning more toward valve stem seals now as it only smokes when starting and when the bike is idling. According to a Youtuber I got in contact with, the VTR uses the same valve stem seals as a 2005 Hyundai Gets 1.3 and should be allot cheaper than the original parts.

Hi Chris, the color is a white grey almost.

Hi Chris, the color is a white grey almost.
If the valve guide seals are in need of replacing you would be seeing 'blue' smoke not what you're seeing, so I think you can rule them out.
Check the oil level at the sight window to make sure that is still at the same level as it was when you changed it over to the new 10W/40 oil.
Also pay attention to the coolant level, check it when the engine is cold.
A compression test may be useful,

Hi Chris, thank you for the response I really appreciate it. I checked the oil level and it has dropped by about 500ml in a week (I drive the bike about 80km (50miles) per day. Looks like the bike is burning oil. I do however still feel that it might be valve stem seals as it smokes when starting and then after a wile the smoke disappears. After a long trip when I stop at a traffic light and let the bike idle for a while, the smoke will come back for a few moments and then disappear again. According to a Youtube friend, these bikes uses the same valve stem seal as that of a 2005 Hyundai Gets 1.3. Apparently exactly the same part, just allot cheaper. My only issue at this stage is the head gaskets as I need to order these from Honda.

Also I did a breakfast run yesterday, did about 200km and the temperature was stable. Did not have any issues and she pulled like crazy. All was perfect except for the smoke every time I started her up.

The oil usage seems a little on the high side, but not drastically. If you do go ahead and replace the valve stem seals, the benefit I can see there will be the replacement of the cylinder head gaskets ( I would suggest using OEM Honda gaskets ).
I did read your post earlier about Hyundai Gets 1.3 valve stem seals apparently being exactly the same part. As I don’t know about that I can’t suggest you using them, that is your choice.
As I mentioned in a previous post, before you start stripping the engine down, if you could get your hands on a compression tester and run a compression test, this might give us a better indication of what is going on,
