Drive chain tension.............

Post by vtrjock »

Egg all over my face? Get the fryin pan out we'll have an omelette!!

Took the vtr back afte it's service coz the chain was clonkin on the connector pipes when you pushed it in the garage etc. Twas a bit slack I thought.

Honda mechanic was cool about it and told me that there was quite a misconception about modern chains and that 1"- 1.5" is the correct amount of freeplay thesedays. The race bikes even more. Well blow me down with a feather!!
I've always run mine at about 3/4 of an inch........

The aftermarket pipe connectors are closer to the chain as well apparently.

Ya live n ya learn :D

I destroyed the output shaft bearing on my FJ12 from overtightening the drivechain... Used to set it at 1 -1.5 inches unloaded.

8O I hope it's from the bottom of the loop... Otherwise I'd be scared the chain could jump out of the sprocket... Just like on my bicycle when I was a kid :)

If i had that much freeplay on my chain it would be rubbing on the link pipe. I think i'm going to have to put a clamp on the link pipe to stop it wearing through.

Mine does the same, so whilst the bike is stripped down I am going to give the link pipe a spank with a hammer to give a little more clearance for the chain..

I am the king of searches, do i get some kind of prize or something lol! I'm not inexperienced in things forum related because i'm a mod on http://www.vwt4forum.co.uk and i know how frustrating it is to see the same old questions being asked.

Back to the subject anyway: I had thought about putting a dent in the link pipe to give some clearance, the Microns i removed had a proper factory dent where the chain passes over it.

Factory dent, eh?

How much are they, then?
Sounds cool, and might take attention off the amateur ones I've put in it....

its cause all us owners of RED firestorms have an unexplainable psychic link, it must be to do with the extra speed our bikes have over other colours... :D
